What is this?

I have a 1995 Ford Ranger XLT, 4 CyL , manual trans.
May have a slave clutch problem. While underneath the truck I noticed a rusted out line, it travels up and below the battery to the black reservoir box , What is this box for?

That is your fuel vapor canister the metal line most likely comes from the fuel tank.

+1, yes, the Charcoal canister used by the EVAP system, it sucks air(gasoline vapor) from the gas tank, runs it thru that filter then sucks it into the intake to be burned

Prevents air pollution, could also be seen as safety measure, lol, longshot.
As you drive around gasoline will slosh around in the tank, as gasoline is exposed to air it will evaporate, so sloshing around exposes its surface area to more air so more vapors in the tank, if there was an accident that accumulated gasoline vapor "could" cause a fire or explosion, longshot yes, but not a 0
EVAP system prevents that build up of vapors, because vehicles with EVAP systems do not use Vented Gas caps like in the old days

If metal line has rusted thru then that would be a vacuum leak, not a big one but a leak none the less
