Tach clusters from 96~2003 Rangers (and many Explorers and Sport Tracs) will physically interchange and the 6 gauges will work BUT some indicator lamps may not work correctly for some year swaps.

The safest bet for a fully functional cluster in a 96 would be a 96~97 Ranger/Explorer cluster. The tach cluster will plug in place of a tachless cluster and work with no wiring changes.

I just did this mod. I purchased a cluster from a 2003 XLT (the silver faced one), repined 3 wires that go into the back of the cluster (the MIL, the check gauge, and the door ajar), swapped the ODO out of my truck to keep the mileage correct, and was good to go. Repining took maybe 5 minutes tops, took longer getting the old cluster out of the dash.
