My 2000 Ranger recently quit starting. I had the battery tested and it is fine. The dome light comes on when I open the door but when I try to start it, it clicks once and everything dies. Also, if I try to turn on the headlights everything dies. If I disconnect the battery and then reconnect it, the dome light will work until I try to start the engine or turn the head lights on. Any ideas? Is there a circuit breaker somewhere that I am tripping? Bad relay?

I noticed when I was reconnecting the battery that the PCM relay clicks when I reattach the negative terminal. Is this normal or is this a symptom of my problem?

 

is it several fast clicks or just a single click when you turn the key? could be a bad starter

 

Remove and clean your battery terminals.

 

Just one click. Cleaned the battery terminals when it first happened and that was not the issue.

 

.could be a bad connection somewhere else. mine was doing this and i cleaned the battery terminals and it kept doing it. finally left me stranded and found out that the connection of the wire to the + battery terminal clamp was corroded so i had to put cut the wire and put a new end on.
