Built a platform for my "backseat"

Well I decided to get rid of the terrible bumps and humps in the "backseat" of my supercab. I built a platform out of MDF, painted it black, and put carpeting on the top. I think it turned out pretty good. One of the pics has dimensions. I didn't search, but maybe there are others who have done something similar?

Gearhead61 01-06-2006 03:04 PM

Cool! What are you gonna do with that now though?

Redneckstone 01-06-2006 03:08 PM

looks good buit you would have put like some 8" subs in it lol

graniteguy 01-06-2006 05:01 PM

Thats sweet!

I built a platform kind of like that out of wood. Mine sets up a little higher and I used 7 legs about 1.5" in diameter to hold the platform up so I could have access to the storage area under it. I also used gray carpet to cover the shelf but I wrapped it around the edge of the shelf to have a soft edge too. I painted the poles gray to blend in with the carpet.

Now I can throw all kinds of crap (tow strap, air compressor, jumper cables, battery charger, snow chains, etc.) under it and the area behind the seats still looks clean. I originally put it back there so I can set my refrigerator there on a flat surface. I had to removed the rear folding seats to make room because I have the four door Supercab.

Nice installation Tony.

mkoenig 01-06-2006 08:04 PM

Needs some hinged access panels on top to keep things stored/locked inside and out of the way.

Looks good!

jrpro130 01-06-2006 08:24 PM

i have to do the same thing..except i'm making the bottom of it my sub box...

i've got some surprises up my sleeve...i'm getting ready for the march meca event here in daytona....ahhhh the beauty

i'll post pics when i'm done...i'm actually doing a worklog.

the bottom of the box will be like what you did...i'm eiminating the humps. Except i'm using legs (2x2 wood) and it is going to be a little different

AWESOME Build and Idea man... :55[1]:

KARPE 01-06-2006 11:29 PM

now you need a tiny dancer to dance on the platform

Thats pretty much why I built it. I'll finish the construction of the box next week when I have more free time. Being able to make it a cube is alot easier than trying to fit the box's dimensions to the crazy humps and bumps in that area. So now its a flat surface, and it looks better.

thanks for the compliments.

do you have a 4 door or a 2 door? also did your ranger come with rear seats?

jtslmn720 01-07-2006 08:20 AM

that looks good... i might make one of those a little narrower and taller then put my sub in there....

2 door and no jump seats. When i first bought it I was like damn this truck is bare bones, and coming from an SVT i really noticed how it was bare bones, now its like, no one wants to sit in a jump seat anyway.

nated0g 01-07-2006 04:53 PM

yeah they are pretty crappy to sit in, but same in a focus.
my wife used to have a zx5, same dimensions as a 3 just with 2 more doors.
does the area behind your seat on the sidewall have any storage value?

popecruz 01-07-2006 07:00 PM

Well there are the two compartments on the sides of the back, I have a can of fix a flat in one of them. They aren't very useful, but I still have access to them. Until I get a tonneau cover the backseat is my only real storage area.

INT3RC3PTOR 01-08-2006 10:01 PM

nice work, looks great... im thinking of somthn in that same order.. since i still have my jump seats out from the BL install.. i dont think im puting em back in so i wanna make nice use of the space witha storage unit of some kind

and yea.. jumpseats are teh ghey... just there for passangers to ***** about lol

TrailRateThisFx4 01-08-2006 10:09 PM

yea man that turned out really nice!

karrbass4life 01-09-2006 09:00 PM

I love the idea but I see only one thing i would change. I would split the top in two and add hinges for even more storage.

ericg 02-14-2006 12:49 PM

okay, last post was on january 9th has anyone seen pics of this finished yet? I'd like to see how it turned out with the system in there.

buzzair 02-14-2006 02:10 PM

This project is up there on my list since my toolbox has to sit on the bump...
