I am wanting to buy an explorer cluster to swap into my Ranger. The explorer cluster has more miles then my Ranger does so is there a way to change the odometer so it reads right?

You could A: swap your current black odometer to the new cluster. OR B: roll the white explorer odometer to the proper reading.


I've been really really lazy on making a how-to for this for people. Pretty much, you give the cluster an autopsy, two outer gauges pop out then the inner gauge pops off. Do the Y-wire trick with a AA battery so you can calibrate it correctly later, then pull the needle off using a fork or a knife. now that the needle is off, there's 3 screws that take a 1/4" to remove the odometer mechanism. Twist the motor off, then the odometer roll kinda pops out. space the ring gear away from the lettering, now you've got room to 'roll the odometer'.


Sorry....i know.....it's all one big old sentance. Give me a day, and i'll get a proper how-to done. And if all else fails, i've got another expo cluster coming, i could just do it for you and we trade tach/speedo gauges. lol. There was a guy charging $50 to do it! rediculous.

 

Dave and Shane, that is exactly what I wanted to hear.

I think I am going to just swap covers. My cluster works great right now so I think swaping covers is probably the easist thing to do.

Shane I appreciate the offer to trade clusters. That still might be an option. Like you said if you could get that "how to" up that would be awsome.

swap covers or swap odometers? If you swap JUST covers, you'll need to pull ALL needles and recalibrate them all. I'm doing pics right meow.

yup did it back in the day on my friends dx civic we put a cluster out of an lx on it (so he could have a tach) and just swaped the odos no prob.

Yeah..and imo.....White faces w/ black letters and black odometer w/ black clear cover looks alot better than the white odometer that's stock on those expo white faced clusters. Actually....doing this how-to, convinced me to swap my white odometer to my old stock black one!

 

If you put the explorer cluster in your ranger. Before you do so swap the temp motors out. You will read freaking HOT with the explorer motor. Happened to me, took longer to take apart the dash than it did to pull the clusters apart and swap the temp gauge motors.

really? I did....maybe it's cause I got an 01 cluster for my 95 then.....

 

I think that's for 97 and earlier, I didnt have that problem either

 

I got the cluster in the mail. I am gonna do the install on friday.

I completed the install today and was very suprised at how easy it was. The "how to" that Shane provided were essential to my success.

When I calibrated my speedo mine only went up to 21mph as compared to 70 in the write up.

Overall I am very happy with how it turned out. For a mod that only cost me $40 I am pretty happy with it.
