I was wanting to change the gauges from green to white. If you scrape off the green coating, without painting a new color, at night would white gauges be the result? OR would the numbers be transparent and show the internals behind the dash? Another Question: How many lights are actually behind the gauges? Would turning those into white led's help also?

 

the gauges would just be white if you scrape the color off. Theres no need for white LED's.

 

Actually you might want to get white L.E.D's if you do it. The stock bulbs have a yellow tint to them for they are NOT a hyper white bulb.

As for the number of bulbs, i believe there are two for each piece. So about 6 bulbs, they are just regular 194 bulbs.

 

The bulbs that are back there, are they on the end of that little post looking thingy?

 

i think there are like 3 or 4 bulbs behind the cluster, and they are spread out throughout the cluster for even (sort of) lighting. you'll have to pull the cluster out so you can have access to the rear of it, where the bulbs come out. you can pull the bulbs, then solder a 220ohm resister to 2 5000+mcd leds and solder the setup to each light socket. (so a total of 3 or 4 resistors and 6 or 8 leds)

i wouldnt reccommend scraping the color off and leaving the stock bulbs to show thru white. i dont think it'll come out looking how you want it, as leo said, the stock bulbs have a definite cheap yellow hue to them. white leds shine bright white... with almost a touch of blue, theyd give it a really nice look i think, but i havent seen it done before :o)

 

I'll probably end up doing this next weekend. Would a good place to get led's be like radio shack?

 

but can you dim the LED's?

 

the leds will be controlled just as if they were a standard bulb. when i had to replace a bulb behind my guages i went to wal-mart and got the cheapest bulbs i could find that would fit and they had a definite more whiteness to them then the stock ones. they also make xenon and krypton bulbs so leds may not be necessary.

 

you can buy like a 50 pack of leds on ebay for cheap, but i've heard they have a higher failure rate than normal. i bought all mine from radio shack. they come in packs of 2 for like $3.99 i think.

 

they also carry the resistors too right?

 

radio shack has everything you will need for every hooking anything electrical in your truck that doesnt deal with hacking up the csm or anything like that. so, yes. radio shack carries resistors and leds in many colors. you can even get them in a nifty little mountable holder.

 

Check this out. scroll down to the SECOND from bottom. Those would work perfect and you wouldn't have to "fab up" your own. It says 6200 mcd so they'd be bright enough

 

Would this replace the bulbs that are behind the gauges or are ours different than these?
