Now that I have the nice Explorer leather seats...lol...

We have 2 dogs, an 80 pound Boxer and a 15 or so pound Italian Greyhound that occassionaly accompany me on weekend trips to a friends house. I only take one at a time when I go, but they both seem to like laying on the passenger seat and I usually lay down a sheet and a thick blanket on the seat bottom to protect it from toenails. For the most part, they just lay down on the passenger seat or the passenger floorboard once we get on the road, but will not stay in the back (supercab) unless the wife is with me and riding in the bed is not an option. Anyone have any good ideas for seat protection in my Ranger? It's quite a cleanup chore after a trip as the boxer leaves alot of shedding reddish hair and slobber marks, the IG is not so bad.

 

You might consider picking up a thick seat cover, something that has some built-in padding. You could slip it over the seat for the ride, and then take it off and clean it afterwards.

 

I have a 88lb lab with a drooling issue so i know where your coming from. I get drool real bad on my doors so i have soemthing called ZEP interior cleaner. It works amzing like if you spray a jet of it youl see the difference for where you didnt so spraying a mist works better and wipe down with a shop rag. mine doesnt shed too much but my truck gets cleaned on sundays so the shop vac usually takes care of it. but if you use a damp rag and wipe fabric, hair usually comes up. atleast thats what my mom does on her sofas because of her cats.

We have a 95lb. German Shepherd. She really can't fit in the pass. bucket seat, and is too big to curl up on the uneven shape of the rear floor of the SC. Since ours is a 93, I just carpeted a piece of 3/8" plywood, and braced it up front w/ a short 2x6", and added 2x2" around the L, R, & Rear edges underneath. Platform sits right on trim in front of jump seats and on raised edge of rear floor beneath the package net. This gives her about 6-8" more F/R and almost a foot more L/R. She's happy to sleep for much of the trip, or lie w/ her head on the center console.
WE Can't sit in the jump seats w/ it in, but they still fold down to get to the jack, etc. Pops out to the bed in 2 minutes. She's not ultra-comfy, but she'll ride from Poconos to Shenandoah Valley of VA. ok. (REALLY happy to see Grandma when we get there though!!! )

I was just thinking what are the chances that I'd find another Iggy owner on these forums! Mine's 13 lbs., his name's Sherlock. Funniest, smartest dog I've ever had- no shedding, knows a ton of tricks (some that I've never seen any of my other dogs do), and he uses his own litterbox! Best part, he doesn't know he's a little greyhound, he's "all dog" in his little mind- lotsa chasing, fetching, tug-of-wars....they're good little dogs!

 

Yeah, we are a rare breed of dog owners! Some firends of ours have 2 and some other people they know also have 2 of them so we ended up finding a breeder about 200 miles away that had AKC registered puppies and we ended up with ours, Sam, as a puppy. He's almost 2 years old now, is mostly black/dark brown and definately suffers from the "big dog syndrome" also...lol We joined a local dog club that has flyball and agility training and competitions and we are trying to train him to run those because he is so fast and energetic. We have a big fenced yard so him and our boxer can run (and poop) out there but we do have to throw a coat on the IG in the winter since he's just skin and bones.

 

If you love your dogs they will be in a kennel properly stored. In an accident a Dog in the cab becomes a Projectile, and will get injured or die. You wouldn't let an Infant ride in the car laying on the floorboard, would you?

good point!...thats why i just walk my dog to places and not take em in the car....besides my dog is a pitbull lmao what if he mauls me while im driving lol...
but honestly shes the biggiest ***** ever...but still..i wouldnt let me kid drive with me unbuckled..

 

Well my female lab is 90 pounds and she rides in the extended cab, I leveled out the floor with a couple of 2X4's and some plywood and then carpeted over it, then I put seat covers on because when we take a trip up north and we eat in the car, she likes to stick her head between the seats and gets drool all over the place. I agree about the dogs in the front seat and being a projectile but in the back cab, I think they are ok, well as ok as someone can be back there.....

My wife recently bought a medium sized tent-like fabric pet carrier that the IG now rides in with the flap zipped shut, keeps him from walking around and stumbling all over the interior. He's actually quite content being in there and sleeps. The IGs like being in a secure, closed in place for some reason, especially where they can find a warm spot. The boxer is getting better at riding in the back of the supercab and staying put so we are making some progress. I think the IG almost caused an accident when he was running around in her car one day so she learned her lesson (good for me too) and bought the carrier.

 

I agree with the concern about the 'projectile dog'. When the shepherd rides in the Subaru she's got a chest harness & seat belt tether. Same would work fine in Ranger, just fixing a tether strap from the harness into the jump seat seatbelt & fold seat up.

I took a pic of her platform w/o carpet. Panel is releived behind seats to let them slide back almost fully. I added the 2x2" underneath the sides & end just to make more room below for star wrench, toolkit, emergency kit & blankets.[IMG]Dog's platform.jpg

 

In case some of you haven't seen an Italian Greyhound, heres ours. Basicly a small greyhound.

 

my dogs ride in the bed. no leash, no kennel. Iv got one half pitbull half weimeraner (sp) and one half black lab half border collie. Riley the collie mix actually prefers to ride on top of the toolbox. He likes to surf up there. I can even do ebrake slides and whip some cookies with him staying up there.

 

I love Italian Greyhounds! They are cute and expensive as all get out!
