Mag Lite Selection

I have been looking at different Mag Lites to mount in my Edge and I have noticed that they come in 2D, 3D, and 4D LEDs. Which one would you guys prefer? I've also seen the same varieties but in C-cells as an alternative. I like the size of the 3D...the 2D is too small...and the 4D is awfully large to mount in such a small pickup. What do you guys think?

I just bought a grey 3D LED from Wal Mart and I think its awesome. It greatly outshines the regular bulb type. It also comes with a regular bulb in the base in case the LED goes out.

I upgraded both my 2D and 3D to LEDS recently, and I think the 3D is slightly better than the 2D. That 3D LED is nice, and as you said a nice compromise in size...not too big, not too small.

I just got a 4D LED and it kicks ***. It is a little big, but its ok by me. If you are concerned about space, get a 3D, but I love the 4!!

Can you just put the leds in an old mag or no?

I can't believe the price I saw for the conversion kits at a store here. I was cheaper off buying a whole new LED mag-lite rather than the conversion kit. But I use my Streamlight Polystinger more than my Mag-Lite I have because my Polystinger is MUCH brighter than Mag-lite. But I keep them both in my truck.

I'm not sure how but I heard they are A LOT brighter...is this true?

I got to looking online and found the actual lengths of the different mag lites...

2D - 10" Long
3D - 12.3" Long
4D - 14" Long

I personally like the 2D by its demensions but I deffinately wouldn't go smaller than that even if they made em just a couple inches shorter...the 3D is a good, medium, size but the 4D is just too large for my regular cab pickup...

Yes, Wal Mart has the Mag Lite conversions but it's like 18 bucks for the LED. Cat Eyez (or something like that) has a universal one that is like 8 bucks, also at Wal Mart. I'm going to try the Cat Eyez one next, as it looked exactly the same (body was a little smaller, but insignificant) and was rated at 3 watts also.
They are a much more white light than the bulbs, and after shining it in my wife's face (without her knowing prior) she can confirm that they are bright as hell! I would say they are at least as bright, but not sure about MUCH brighter. Definetly whiter though.
Biggest selling point for me was the longer battery life, a real disadvantage to the old bulbs.

Not trying to make this into a "post your maglite mods" thread....but mounting location was brought up....

btw....do you have an extended cab or regular cab?? I have my 4D mounted on the inside plastic on the C pillar.......I took off the plastic, made 1/8" support plates, and used machine screws to mount the Mag Mounts......only problem is the damn batteries shaking around in the darn flashlight on bad roads. lol.

I have a regular cab...nice setup on yours! I like it! I just wish I knew of a way that is convenient, looks decent, but also isn't getting in the way that will work on mine too! Any suggestions? Also, does walmart sell those mag lite mounting brackets? If not does some place like AutoZone have it?

Sometimes. They are hard to find, (at least for me) but the local Ace hardware had them, as do other smaller hardware stores.

Well I went to Walmart and was looking between the 3D and the 2D and I went ahead and bought the 2D because I found it to be the most convenient sized mag lite for my pickup...oh yeah, and its LED! It is bright as heck!

I still have my old 2D cell Mag. Makes for a great weapon too. I was in a "situation" once before where I cranked a guy across the side of his head/face. Needless to say, after that, the "situation" ended.

Still on the original bulb too, the spare is still in the butt end of the Mag in the foam.

I like the long ones that the truckers have, the 6 or 7 D cell ones. As long as an arm. Now that's cool.

I just originally got my 2D cell Mag for camping. I only had a few bucks in my wallet at the time and could only get one 2 pack of D cell batteries, so getting the 3 D cell was out of the question. LOL

Are the 4D brighter than the 2D, what is the advantage besides combat?

i've a 3-D cell mag lite in the cab behind the jump seat and then i have a 6-D cell mag lite (looks like i'm the only one crazy enough to mount one of these) mounted on the inside of the bed towards the back on the left side.
