okay so im new to this so no one go blasting me for asking something that has proably been asked a thousands times.

so i have a 03 ranger edge 4x4 and im looking to swap out the bulbs to red led and i have been reading so of the threads that others have put up and i have what appers to be the clear needls but the numbers are green so im trying to find out is that some the bulb color that is behind the face or is that some kind of paint stuff that needs to sanded off or what if some one cant clear up this issue that would be great and i would apprciate the infomation

 

To answer your question, Yes, paint on the back of the Gauge Faces and it has to come off.
To do it and you have read, take a little time and patient and a set of pre-steps that you should take to make sure the speed-o is put back together the same way it came apart.

Now not to rip you up and down on the posting that has been done a few times BUT instead for your grammar, it $ucks ! No capital letters, not punctuation and no spell chk, how do you expect someone to understand what you are saying ?

Good Luck on your LED swap, easy but time is needed to do right.
IMHO… the coloring that you end up with after scraping off the green will dilute the new color and there is no way to add more than a couple of layers of the new coloring without causing problems in other areas.
So if you want Blue and you use blue paint and blue LEDs you get a decent blue but other colors like RED turns out more pink than RED.

 

i did this one for a friend not too long ago. stripped the green off, used some tamiya clear red model paint. 2 coats is plenty. then single 5mm red leds were added.

 

As I said “Kind of Pinky” just not RED enough for me.
The White Face Gauges, once the green has been scraped off, are the numerals white or clear ?

 

Clear. The KPH are white and left white in the photos below. White face/silver face....same overlays just different main color. The face side of the overlays, the numbers have a black outline. Silver face pictured.

 

yep, they are clear. the "pinky" color may be causes by my camera, or your computer screen. they are clearly red in person.

This may be a dumb question, and in fact it has probably been answered some where on this website, but what are the exact LEDs you guys used.

For example i want to change my lights to blue, what are the name, or clear description of the LEDs?

 

if i rember correctly its the 194 bulb but you can go to this web site and you can look up what leds will work the web site is superbrightled.com an i can promise there bright i have there Rigid Loop Festoon blue bulb in my jeep

 

oh so you bought these? Rigid Loop Festoon bulb with SMD LEDs and used those for your dashboard?

 

There's ALOT of different setups...just plug-in's, individual 5mm led's soldered, LED strip lights, combinations of all 3... it's endless. Best thing I can tell you is thumb through the multiple LED cluster threads. There's a how-to showing my old LED cluster that used 36 5mm component LED's that did very well but fail in comparison to the stuff member Jp7 does. But I was only out less than $5 in materials (eBay parts from China FTW).

 

in mine, i have around 60 5mm leds. like shane, i paid like $6 shipped for 100 on ebay. the other 40 will work in the hvac, headlight switch, fog light, cruise, etc.

yes i bought the Rigid Loop Festoon bulb with SMD LEDs but not for my dash i was just saying there lights from that company are bright what you need if your going to do a simple bulb replacement is the 194 this is what i recomend there are 2 options the first is this one WLED Miniature Wedge Base bulbs with High Power SMD LEDs - 360 type and number 2 is this NeoWedge series LED Lamp ther are a few others on there web site

i did the plug in version with smd's. like shane said, its fail compared to JP7's work... but its with in the means for what i can do. and its enough of a change and definetly makes the cluster look tons better!

 

Not to worry. This winter I'll be making a direct PCB replacement that only has 2 wires to hook up. Results will be even better than the 2 I've posted above. I expect these will be for sale by early Jan 2011.

 

JP how'd you get the odometer changed? is it a seperate LED?
