Did you hook up the GY/BK wire for the VSS?

Also, the sensors are NTC or "Negative Temperature Coefficient" -- a fancy work that means their resistance goes down as temperature goes up.

If you are reading colder by some amount, it can be an indication of excessive wiring resistance due to a bad or corroded splice, bad piece of wire, or whatever.

But often it's just that the reading won't update due to the VSS not being connected.

Where did you mount the temperature sensor? Location does have quite an impact on the reading. Mine was originally reading 20-30F too high. Moved it from behind the battery to the fender and now it's within 2F most of the time, which is darn close enough for me.

Yea I just connected it the other day, is there someway I can tell if its working or not? Like the other day it was really 30 degrees out but the OHC was saying it was 20. So if I have a bad connection with the temp sensor it could alter the reading? Maybe I'll check on that tomorrow then.

Its mounted below the headlight, where it is on the Explorers.

Um let me go outside and find it, it was just black spray paint from autozone. Use adhesion promoter before and you'll be good to go. It was originally blue, but you can't tell unless you take it off and flip it over.

Yep any autoparts store will have one. The Krylon Fusion should work just fine. Make sure to clean it off before you spray the adhesion promoter on tho.

Several people have expressed a fear of cutting the head liner. Just cut well undersize and enlarge as needed. It's easy!

Don't forget I warned in the how-to that there are two such colored wires on the GEM. Make sure you got the correct one for sure. That's one more thing it might be good to validate in your troubleshooting.

Yeah I got the one out of the brown connector like it says. I'll try switching it and see if it makes a difference.

How did you tap in? Did you use "tap splices"? If you used a blue one, get rid of it and get red ones. I casually use blue ones in a bunch of places in my truck and later regretted it -- in some cases immediately regretted it. They just don't tap the thinner gauge wires properly.

Yeah I used a red one, I've tried blue ones before but on 18+ gauge sometimes they just don't make as good of a connection as the red ones. I'll double check the connection before hand.

Oh, yes, it's totally do-able in a 95. You have the same basic interior.

awesome. i've been lookin to fix up the interior a little to make it a lil nicer and since my headliner is crap, you can scratch through the cloth with your fingernail without tryin, i was gonna replace the headliner so i can put the console in at the same time.

I'm confident it can be done in a 93 despite the interior overhaul in 95+, correct?

(I know the OHC will fit, just more concerned about the wiring)

OHC Mode question

Hey all,

I've got most of the parts for my OHC install, gonna start next week on it. Is there a Program code for the mode I need? Thought I read that somewhere in a post. Got my OHC from a 2001 Explorer.

Thanks,

2001 Explorer manual
Starts on page 92 of the actual manual , and goes from there
Its just for calibration, so follow that, and your set.

Hope that answers your question.

I was thinking about doing the OHC in my '05 Ranger, especially if they included an overhead garage door opener. I asked on one of the Ranger Forums (I forget if it was here or RPS) if the Explorer OHC's included a door opener, and someone replied that they do not.

Yet the OHC in your photo looks like it has a button labeled "Garage". That's for the door opener, right?

What years/trim level did the Explorer OHC have the garage door opener? I know that my '93 Sport did not have the OHC.

If you haven't sold it yet, I may be interested. It's even the right color for my truck. Any thoughts as to what the map light problem might be?
