what to make center console out of.

well, ive decided to man up and cut my 60/40 seats. ill get around to this as soon as i can but ive been trying to decide on what im going to make the center console out of.

im going to build a custom one. should it be particle board, plywood, or what? do i have to get into fiberglass work? much obliged.

build the framework with MDF, its much sturdier and more solid than anything else. if you want some fancy shapes youll have to get out the fiberglass. when i built the console in my truck, i just used MDF and covered it with carpet, its a custom downfire sub box, blends in well

bob, i was thinking of integrating a sub and 6x9 box in with the console as somethin is makin me want to put my seats back in. i may do the cut tomorrow and then see what i have to play with in regards to measurements and such.

i may also want to put the cb in it and itll prolly be blended with the cupholders.

how well does MDF accept paint? i know particle board hates it and makes it look ugly, at least rattle can anyway.

I am doing the same thing as Sean or at least something close. I am in the process of building a fiberglass console to house my CB and possibly an amp. I would have to say that you should do a fiberglass console too. MDF can't compare to the smooth lines you can get with glass.

MDF??

I jsut did the 60/40 conversion this weekend. I plan on building mine out of steel. Proly 1/4" square tube frame adn skin it with some thin sheet metal.

I am mounting my head unit in there with lockable cover (theft prevention) dont want to deal with taht again!

MDF does paint very well, i build cabinets and bookshelves with it for a living. just get a good coat of primer on it and it will paint very well.

mult-density fibreboard or sumthin of that sort. can be found at home depot. its really tough stuff. not the cheapest though. i believe its running 24$ for a 5x8 sheet here.

Medium-Density Fiberboard... I too work with the stuff for a living..

I'v got the steel in my garage to build a console for my truck, just havent gotten around to it yet. And I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to skin it and how to cut out the rectangle for my CB and have it look good. I bought some cup holders for a boat from a local marine shop, they work well for consoles.
