02 Ranger 4x4 and 08 F350 4x4
Its good to join you. I bought a new Diesel F350 Superduty in June and now I finally get to drive my 02 Ranger Edge- my wife is busy with the other one. She is currently doing hotshot delivery service when she isn't caring for her father. He lives about 70 miles south so we are buying lots of this suddenely very valuable fuel. I am a diesel and steam power engineer having spent time in the Merchant Marine on both type of vessels. Both trucks have no problem hauling my 16 foot flatbed trailer but the 08 does do it a bit quicker. A few nights ago I hauled my sons 92 4x4 Ranger home on the trailer in the rain. Any way my Ranger doesn't get but 2 mpg better on the freeway running light than the 08 1 ton. The Ranger gets 20 if I drive like a grandma on the freeway, the F350 gets 18. 4000 lbs difference in weight. What is the deal? I am thinking of getting a chip or programer if you think it would be worth the money. I have 92,000 miles on the Ranger and still on the original plugs and wires it runs smooth amd the milage is about the same as when it was new. What are my options according to your experiences?

Your Diesel F350 is diesel, they are more efficient and well...better engines.
The Ranger is quiet though. It is also safer on the road(in terms of other drivers) and much more maneuverable. Plus if your ranger is a 4.0 then it is probably quicker than your F350. The 4.0s are damn fast(i have one, its fun!).
A "bamachip" would be worth the money for you, especially if you're doing lots of driving.
What is the merchant marines? I can't remember but I somehow think its just another term for working on a ship?

Dude when did a Honda compare at all to a diesel F350? That's like saying my paper airplane is faster than your truck because you should see an F-16 take off.
I just googled the 2008 F350 0-60. It said 7.4 seconds(but there's like 30 diff possible packages too)

welcome aboard mike!
honestly, if you want to spend the money the 2 best things you can do for the ranger is get a full exhaust including JBA headers and a full cat-back exhaust system with 2.5" diameter tubing and a Superchips X-Calibrator 2. If you get the X-Cal 2 like was mentioned above, try to get it from Doug over at Bamachips....
Those 2 things will yield the highest net HP/TQ gains for your ranger...Now this is all under the pretense that your ranger is a 4.0 SOHC and not the 3.0 Vulcan...

if he's getting a tuner for the Ranger, you'll be hard pressed to get the options and tune files from Bully Dog or Banks...neither of them specialize in gas engines half as much as they do the diesel engines....
If he's getting one for the 350 then you are right...either company can help squeeze out up to 500 extra HP and up to 800 extra ft.lbs TQ....

Fred at Rogue Performance is an alternative source of tunes/tuners he does tunes for Rangers and is a member on these forums.

Yes the chip or programer would be for the Ranger. I really runs good still with the exception that when cold it has a rattle if i get into the throttle to hard. Reading the mpg threads 20 on the freeway isn't horrible but I was wondering how much better any one has done? It is a 4.0 L automatic and has been a dependable vehicle. My new 6.4 L Twin turbo diesel F350 SRW, Superduty, crewcab, swb, 8000 lbs at the curb mt will blow the doors off of my Ranger and a whole lot of other rigs out there but that isn't why I bought it. We have a 32 foot Tahoe 5th wheel at about 14,000 # on the hoof. Also my wife is operating a hotshot delivery service for machinery and other cargo. I plan to join her when I retire and we will probably use the Ranger for lighter loads at that time. To see some interesting stories take a look at the kill stories on the powerstroke.org site about what those babies do when challenged.
Thanks for the welcomes and the advice I will be reading it carefully to make a pick.
