2003 ranger 4wd 3.0
have a 2003 ford ranger 3.0 4wd auto check engine light comes on and running rough then get up an going the light starts to flash then got out and a smell of rotten eggs out of the exhaust were do I start 144000 miles thankyou
Start by getting the codes read, free at most auto parts stores.
Write them ALL down and post back.
Don't by any parts yet, chances are the sensors are working properly and just reporting what system to check.
Driving with a flashing check engine light is dangerous to the engine, recommend not driving before you do serious damage.

CEL(check engine light) comes on when computer has detected a problem that it can't correct, so it needs outside help, from the driver/owner when convenient
FLASHING CEL means engine damage may occur RIGHT NOW, so not an "at your convenience" issue
Usually this occurs when engine has misfires, "rough running", so take foot off the gas pedal if CEL starts to flash and it should stop flashing
1995 and up Rangers use OBD2 protocol code numbers, engine codes start with P for power train, P0302 means misfire #3 cylinder, P0304 means misfire #4
Codes are NOT in English, they are binary computer language, which are poorly translated into english, lol.
O2 sensor codes, there are 20 of them, do not mean O2 sensor is bad, if a sensor is mentioned in the english translation it usually means the sensor is GOOD or computer wouldn't know there was a problem, so "don't shoot the messenger", i.e. don't change the sensor that reported the problem
Look codes up on a full list of code, don't "Google" a code number, list is seen here: https://therangerstation.com/tech_li...II_codes.shtml
Most auto parts stores will read your codes for free, have a pen and paper and WRITE THEM DOWN, "I think it was P0.............." is worse than no code at all
Auto parts guys sell auto parts, lol, I know DUH, so they will want you to buy a part after reading the codes, up to you but..............if they were mechanics they wouldn't be working at the parts counter
In your case I would plan on getting a new set of spark plug if you can't remember the last time they were changed
The rotten egg smell is because of the misfires, gasoline is not being burned up in the engine so the catalytic converter has to burn it up
You could have gotten some "bad gas", when did you fill up last?
All gasoline has some water in it, bad gas has too much water in it
Water is heavier than gasoline so will settle to the bottom of the gas tank when vehicle is parked overnight
Fuel pump in the gas tank is at the bottom of the tank so.................................
When you start up the engine it will run OK for a few minutes from the good gas in the lines and filter, then the water gets to the engine and it starts to run rough, can be sudden
