3rd Toy is the charm

91 Ranger, 4.0l I believe. 2wd XLT and not sure if the odo has rolled or not but it shows 75k.

Two toys and two hospital visits later, here we are. First toy, taken out by a semi running a red. 2nd toy, taken out by some p.i.t.a kid that was paying attention and blew through an intersection. This is now number three and hopefully going to stick around.

My buddy is giving me his old rangers, been a yard ornament for 4 years because he thought the freeze plug rusted out. I'm getting it road ready at his place before I get it to my place. I've dug in and found a few things good and bad.

I've been lurking here for weeks and figured I'd finally sign up. There's lots of questions I'm going to try and answer for myself before I start asking them here but I can tell you now....A/C and vacuum lines are 2 things I know little about.

Welcome to the forum, officially, lol

Looks like a 4.0l V6 engine, no distributor, has coil pack, 1989-1992 body style, 2.9l and 3.0l V6s both had distributor with that body style

Good reliable engine, only overheating kills these, well cracks the heads, but they till run, lol

Drain all the gas in the tank, get a new fuel filter
Gasoline quits being "fuel" after about 6 to 8 months
Fuel system will be clogged up with "varnish" so you will need to run Seafoam or similar cleaner in the gas tank for the first few tanks, premium doesn't help, Seafoam is cheaper, lol

Do 50/50test for start up, spray fuel into the intake
The spark systems on these are pretty bulletproof so no starts are almost always fuel related

The tank was almost empty according to him so I didn't bother draining it. For the initial test I hooked up a jump box and turned the key on to see if pump worked, it did and the motor turned but no fire. Next i checked for pressure in the line under the hood, it sprayed well. Took about 3 gallons of gas and a whole bottle of seafoam, mixed them well, and dumped it in. Let that sit for about 2 weeks before I could get back to it.

Battery was toast so got a new battery, she fires up well and runs smooth for the 45 seconds I'll run it at a time. The number next issue is getting the freeze plug issue resolved on a temp basis. The old plug didn't rust out, it's completely missing. Got under there with a camera and got to watch the water spill out as it filled up, also I could see some residents have taken shelter in there so that's going to be fun. I've got a decent plan of attack.

All 4 tires are shot im sure, haven't tried to air them up but the beads are seperate and tires look rotted. I'm thinking I'll find a set of 15 or 16" rims and then go from there. I don't want anything fancy, just something 4.5×5 that will fit and be cheap on tires.

The rubber expansion plugs work great and easier to install than the cheaper steel plugs, they also don't rust out, lol
