94 ranger 2.3 starting issues
My Ranger is making a noise when trying to start that is unfamiliar to me which leads me to believe the starter isn’t engaging the flywheel which is causing it to freewheel i assume.. im not a master mechanic but I’m pretty mechanical smart! I’ve fixed this truck many times so please don’t doubt me because I’m a female guys.. just need help is all diagnosing so I can fix it please and thank you all

Yes, if you hear the "Click" of starter relay but then just hear an electric motor spinning(or grinding) and the engine is not turning, then starter solenoid on the starter motor is not pushing out the starter motors gear to engage the engines gear(ring gear)
So need to replace starter motor
Diagram here of your type of starter motor: https://www.carparts.com/blog/wp-con...r-1024x518.jpg
Pretty much all Ford starter motors from late 1980's use this type
The larger part is the electric motor
The smaller part on top is a solenoid/relay
Larger battery positive cable is connected to the larger relay part on the smaller tube
Smaller wire is connected to the solenoid's activation post, smaller post usually has a "S" next to it
When the smaller S post gets 12volts from key in START it energizes(becomes a magnet) it pulls back which pushes the starter motor's gear out all the way to mesh with Ring Gear on engine
THEN the contacts at the rear connect battery positive cable to starter motor directly, and it starts to spin
If for some reason the starter gear doesn't mesh with ring gear gear then starter motor just spins with no movement of engine
When starter motor is out inspect the ring gear's teeth for damage, the starter motor's gear is a softer metal, on purpose, so shouldn't ever damage the ring gear, but have a look
Extra credit, lol
The electrical part on the inner fender is often called a "starter solenoid" that is a hold over from the days before "relays" were in common use
Its now called the starter relay because a relay's only purpose is to make or break an electrical connection, which is what it does
A Solenoid causes movement of something, in this case the lever that moves the gear, but it can also move a valve open and closed, like EGR solenoid or transmission solenoids
On a starter motor its a solenoid/relay because it does both functions
