My name is John, my nick is Reno, given to me from my Senior D.S. in the Army. I have a 2000 Ranger xl 4.0 auto 4x2, it has developed some hiccups, most have been resolved, still a project in the making.

Welcome to the forum

Thank you for your Service

You have a 4.0l OHV engine, last year for it, used in Rangers from 1990-2000, in 2001 Rangers got the 4.0l SOHC engine
Do not allow this engine to overheat, pull over and let it cool down, do not "try to make it home", just be patient, lol, limp home allowing engine to cool down in short hops
The heads had weak spots in the castings that WILL CRACK if overheat too much or too long
A $10 broken hose could cost you over $1,000 if you have to replace the heads

You have a 5R55E automatic, 2WD version
A4LD, 4R55E and 5R55E were same basic transmissions used in Rangers from 1986 thru 2012, so a good automatic trans

You can get your owners manual here: https://www.ranger-forums.com/genera...1-models-3747/

And 2000 Ranger brochure here, to see XL package/options: https://www.therangerstation.com/art...ger-brochures/

Hi Reno,

By coincidence, I'm about to get my hands on a 2000 Ranger XL 4x2 2.3L flareside/stepside. It is in very good shape mechanically. I know who owned it and he took very good care of it. It needs paint. Once I get that taken care of I'm thinking of other "upgrades".
