Another new guy here
Hey folks... new to the forum. Been a Ford guy forever but I now own my first Ranger: a super clean, lowish miles '98 2WD SuperCab 3.0L... with a severely blown head gasket. Like, probably-needs-an-engine blown. But the truck is so clean, and I'm kind of past the point-of-no-return. I figured I'd better get in with the folks who know these trucks, haha. Looking forward to learning something!
Welcome to the forum
3.0l Vulcan engine was used in Fords from 1986 thru 2008, Rangers had then from 1991 to 2008, Mazda B3000 1994 to 2008
Good read here on the changes to these engines over the years: https://therangerstation.com/tech_li..._0-build.shtml
Not alot of changes really, and if you did want to swap the whole engine pretty much any year would work with your upper and lower intake bolted to it, so wiring and fuel system matches up
But head gaskets are not all that hard to change, you will have TTY head bolts in 1998, so need a new TTY head bolt set, older 3.0ls didn't use these, so there is some confusing on torque settings, lol.
If you see, "and then turn 90deg" you have the correct torque sequence
Some things to check
On the front of engine is a 90deg coolant fitting, it liked to rust out, and hard to remove with all the accessories in the way, so give it a good look
The water pump has pass thru on the front engine cover, it liked to leak between engine and cover, again hard to get to so give it a good look
There are two different head gaskets, FWD Cars and RWD Rangers
