Engine with Low Compression Please Help

Hello from the Mtns of North Carolina. I have a stock 04 Ford Ranger with the 4.0 V6, 4wd. 130k miles. My fourth ranger in the last 30 years but the first time i have posted here. My current issue is it starts but wont run and I smell raw fuel. I have replaced the fuel filter and two fuel flow sensors, Fuel pump works fine, and has good pressure. Plugs on passenger side are fine, but drivers side plugs are black and that bank of cylinders has low compression. Could this be a head/valve job or a whole engine replacement?
