First time Ranger owner
Hello everyone!
I recently purchased a 2003 Ford Ranger Edge on somewhat of a whim. I was browsing a used car site and stumbled across it at an unbeatable price, and decided to take the plunge. It's a bright yellow '03 Edge with a 3.0L Vulcan and 5 speed manual, but sadly only a 2x4. It's in what I would consider exceptional condition with only one small rust spot on the body, which I plan to fix, and only light rust on the frame. It was originally from St. Louis MO, so I think it escaped some of the dreaded 'rust belt'. It's got 106K miles on it, but has been totally flawless drive train wise. In any case, it's my new project vehicle and I'm enjoying working on it so far. I decided to hop on here just in case I run into any issues or questions in working on it, which I already have. I look forward to meeting some of y'all and becoming part of the Ranger community!
Cheers and have a good night!

Welcome to the forum
2003 3.0l Ranger would use the M5OD-R1 manual transmission, M5R1
This 3.0l is called the 3.0l Vulcan engine, used from 1986 thru 2008 in several Ford models
It is a HIGH RPM engine, makes best power at 3,500-3,900 RPMs, unlike most engines that are 2,500-2,900 rpm, so don't be afraid to REV it up, thats what its design requires.
The 3.0l with M5R1 was a good reliable combination
Just a heads up, 2003 Ranger will have PATS(passive anti-theft system), this requires a "transponder key" to start the engine, it came with 3 keys from the factory and those key's "numbers" were programmed into the PATS Memory, so ONLY those 3 keys could start the engine.
If you only have 1 key now you need to go to a locksmith and have him make a new key and added it to your PATS system with a laptop plugged into the vehicle, or add 2 new keys
If you have 2 working keys you can add a 3rd yourself
If you lose your 1 working key then you would need to pay a Mobile Locksmith to come to where the truck is to get it running again, $$$$, or have it towed $$$$
You can download your owners manual here: https://www.ranger-forums.com/genera...1-models-3747/
Good to have the searchable PDF version, verses thumbing thru pages, lol
2003 Ranger brochure can be downloaded here: http://www.motorologist.com/wp-conte...r-brochure.pdf
Good to see what options you have or don't
