Hello to all of you Ford Ranger pros I know I can learn from!!!

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post my problem but I will give it a shot. To start, I have a 03 Ranger xlt 4.0 sohc 4x2 with no balance shaft. When driving it 3 miles from home I heard this noise that sounded like a nut had come off and was rattling in the front cover? Getting back in truck I drove slowly to home and that noise stopped!! Just 5 blocks from home I heard what sounded like my timing chain was loose. Got in the garage and it was still in perfect time when I shut it off but at tdc though, just where I stopped it. Well not knowing this engine has 3 timing chains, I proceeded to remove front case which I did and found several fairly deep scratched marks all around. Then I saw the jackshaft, left front timing chain and plastic parts spread all around. Ha ha I found the problem! ! Well guys and gals here is where I messed up not knowing. I took the jackshaft chain and sprocket off and removed the timing chain and broken guides and cassette. I now started reading and was told that if these parts were removed the cams both had to be timed!!! Only if I would have known this before hand as I could have put #1 at TDC and used the ford kit I just bought I think it's a 6488 kit? Anyway guys I just wanted to start from the beginning so you would know exactly where I'm at. I did pull the motor and put it on stand for ease on my 59 year old back. I wanted to do it right by doing the right rear also. All was good back there but I will replace it all. I need your help and guidance in explaining how step by step PLEASE how to and where to start putting the correct timing of both cams and jackshaft, and I'm going to be using the old parts to put back on if this is what I need to do to get the engine to turn to tdc. Correct me if I'm wrong please!!! I'm just stuck knowing I did no research on this motor and I could have left the sprockets alone I would have no problem using the 6488 kit. Thank you for any help you can give me!!!! The banditgsf

Sounds to me like u need a service manual......lucky for u they aren't all that expensive on eBay....If I were u, I would try to find a newer model motor from a wrecked vehicle from a reputable salvage yard and drop that in......That's my thought though, by the time u buy the tool and all the parts to fix it, you will have a pretty big investment on your hands..... plus with a newer engine that issue was already addressed ... Of course though, there can also be many unknowns when getting a salvage motor, that's why u need to be picky and go with someone reputable......Personally, I always want to see the vehicle , and completely look it over before motor is pulled...(when possible) if not than I still wanna inspect the motor, I'm not just gonna take whatever they wanna give me, if not than I will move on elsewhere.......it's my hard earned money I'm spending, so I will have final say......goodluck

+1 you need a service manual.

I am disabled and spend a lot of time here trying to help people, and with all the time I have I couldn't possibly invest the time needed to type step by step directions including the torque specs you will need.

I would suggest like 07nhbpsi mentioned and get a manual, however you can sign up for online service manuals like Alldata diy or Mitchel on demand diy

Currently I use Alldata yet the little I checked out Mitchel I think they cater more to the DIY industry and plainly spell things out for the reader.

Thanks gus for your time and information. I have already invested in the manual but it doesn't tell me where to start to time an engine that was out of time. I all ready spent the $$$ on the 6488 tool kit. I think I may have made this sound worse then it is. All that was wrong was a left front guide that started to come apart but did not loose the chain or timing before I got it home. The milage is 98k. The motor is strong and truck is cherry. All that's needed is to time both heads. Motor is very clean so you never no what's at a salvage yard but normally something that needs to be rebuilt. But thanks again guys very much appreciated. Bob

Banditgsf1 again asking about timing my camshafts after I prematurely removed the jackshaft sprocket and chain, along with the left front timing chain and worn guide. No putting cams in time because it was said that once the chains and sprockets were removed both cams had to be timed. Is it true that if u have the otc 6488 kit that when you go to lock a cam in place it will only fit if it's in time? If that's true it should be fairly easy to time as I heard on utube it (the tools ) only fit on one way. If there's any one else out there that may help me I would kindly appreciate it!!! Thanks Bob Ps, I'm also going to try both links #1 All data or Mitchel, thanks to EaOutlaw and 07nhbpsi.
