Hello all!

The Ranger is a 2002 Ford Ranger 4.0L Automatic 4x4 with 199k miles in good condition for $4,300. Other than a few minor issues like the back doors won't open, the cruise control button covers are missing. Any advice is welcome.

 

2002 Ford Ranger:
~ V6~4.0L~SOHC Engine is notorious for TimingGuide+Chain "Death Rattle"
due to OilPressurized TimingTensioners &\or Oil+Filter not having been changed.
~ V6~4.0L~SOHC is also known for junk Plastic ThermoStatHousing+Radiator+HeaterValve leaks.
~ 5SpeedAuto 5r55e Transmission is notorious for various weaknesses\failures,
percursors are often 2nd~3rdShift RPM Flares & delayed Drive\Reverse engagement;
200kMiles is near typical EndOfLife for 5r55e Transmissions.
~ 1354 4x4 TransferCase is known for ShiftMotor+ControlModule failures; relatively easy fixes.
Be sure to check OBD2 TroubleCodes; need a scanner that reads both StandardSAE & ProprietaryFord codes.

 

I have the Blue Driver And BAFX OBDII scanners? And the guy says the transmission was rebuilt two years ago. I don't feel to great about buying it now though after what I just read. Are there any year/engine Rangers you would recommend?

 

Can't recommend any specific Year+Make+Model; any vehicle is going to have it's problems+quirks; they're man-made-machines, so they will break+fail.
My 2001 V6~4.0L~SOHC & 5r55e & 1354 have been reliable for 20years\240kMiles now, but they do require regular maintenance.
All of the above issues+weaknesses can be mitigated+overcome if you are aware of them.
Like the "Golden City Of El Dorado", a maintenance\trouble free driving experience is a myth.
