Lots of info

New to the forum. I recently got a 2002 Ranger XLT supercab 4x2 from my brother in law for the price of a new battery. Not a bad deal. Came across the forum when googling various info about the truck. Decided to join. Lots of information, can’t wait to deep dive in. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum

Do forget to post year of Ranger, and engine model with any question
Also manual or automatic can matter

2002 had 3 engine options
2.3l DOHC Duratec 4cyl engine, not to be confused with earlier 2.3l SOHC Lima engines, totally different engines
3.0l OHV Vulcan V6 engine, used in Rangers from 1991 thru 2008
4.0l SOHC V6 engine, not to be confused with 4.0l OHV V6 used in earlier Rangers, again totally different engines

Automatic will be a 5R44E or 5R55E, depending on engine
Manual is an M5OD-R1(M5R1) regardless of engine size but is engine specific for bolting to engine

2002 Ranger will have PATS(passive anti-theft system), this requires a "transponder" key to start engine, a PATS key, each PATS key has a unique number in its handle, RFID tag, each "working key" has its number programmed into your vehicles PATS Memory
Make sure you have a Spare working PATS key or you will be stranded and need to be towed if you lose the key or it is broken
Most locksmiths can cut new PATS key add keys to your vehicle
Or they can CLONE your current working PATS key so you have a spare key, i.e. copy your key cut like any other key, but they can READ the number of your key and then WRITE it to a blank PATS keys RFID tag, so PATS "sees" the same number and allows start up
