New here, I have two rangers.

Hi all, I’m 17 and I have tow rangers, one red, one silver. My silver one I’m trying to keep nice as it is a 2wd, 4.0 5 speed powered fun machine. The paint is also great on her. The red one is a 4wd which is the one I sadly beat on a little more, transporting me and my many lawn mowers. It is powered with a 2.9 and has a 5 speed. I did a bucket seat conversion because the 60/40’s support wires blew out on the drivers cushion. I like to build lawn mowers into cool things like race mowers, mud mowers, sadly it isn’t too cheap but it’s fun! I live in Washington where everything never has a chance to be dry, or be clean for that matter. Here’s some pictures of my rangers!

Welcome to the forum

They are 1989-1992 model bodies, Generation 1.5 or 2 depending on who asks, lol
In 1993 Rangers got a 2" wider body

2.9l and 4.0l shared the same block, so motor mounts and bell housings are the same
Both are very reliable engines
Never allow either to over heat, you WILL crack a head if they do

The 2WD 4.0l will have the M5OD-R1(M5R1) manual transmission, it uses ATF, yes automatic transmission fluid, not gear oil

The 4WD 2.9l has the Mitsubishi FM146 and a BW1354 transfer case, 1989 may still have BW1350

Be sure to change coolant every 2 years and also reverse heater hoses at the firewall at that time it will help heater core last longer

good to know, yes both the engines have treated me wonderfully adding up to about 11000 miles driven between the two. I was wondering if 2.9 heads fit on a 4.0. Cause they really are about the same motor

Great looking Rangers. I just recently got my first 4.0 in a Sport Trac so dont know much about those. The 2.9 has been a great motor for me in years past. Basic Maintenance will go a long way on keeping your trucks on the road.

My son just bought a 90 model with the 2.9. There are some minor differences between the older 2.9 trucks. Dash, Grill and some thing under the hood. I am looking forward to learning the differences and a little more in depth.
