New (to me) Ranger owner

Hi all!

I was recently given my dad's 87 Ranger XLT. It's a 4x4 with the 2.9 V6. It had been sitting in his garage for about 10 years. Currently working on getting it fully road worthy. Hope to gain some knowledge about the old truck here, so thanks in advance for everything.

After a wash and polish

Welcome to the forum

NICE looking Ranger

2.9l can have some valve train noise but doesn't hurt anything
NEVER EVER overheat engine, you will crack a head, not might WILL

Shift into 4High and then 4Low, then back to 2WD once a month, just sitting in the driveway, don't have to drive it in 4WD, this keeps the electric shift motor on transfer case clean and lubed, failure of these shift motors is caused by disuse more than wearing out, lol

1987 will have 2 fuel pumps, one in the gas tank, lift pump, and one in the frame rail under driver's seat area, the high pressure pump, also a fuel filter between this pump and the engine
There can be a cartridge type filter between the gas tank and high pressure pump, this is often just a reservoir with no filter inside, so cap doesn't unscrew, its factory sealed

1987 4x4 will either have a FM-145 manual trans or an A4LD Automatic
