Serpentine Belt Removal

I have a 2002 Ranger 4X4 with a 3 liter engine. I have a noise that sometimes sounds like a bird chirp and sometimes a squeal. I suspect the water pump. I've been trying to figure out how to remove the serpentine belt but can't see how. The idler wheel (which I assume is the tensioner) is not spring loaded as far as I can tell. I've been reading about using a 3/8" breaker bar but I don't see where this could be used. I hope it's not so simple that I look like a real idiot. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

it is spring loaded i guess. just act like your tightening(i think) the bolt and the whole thing should move.

I tried that once and it just felt like I was tightening the bolt but will try again in the morning. Thanks for the info.

Are you on the lower Idler Pulley? NOT the upper one. The Upper is JUST a Idler Pulley and the Lower is a Tensioner. You need to put a lil *** in to it. just push it down. You may need to buy/rent a special tool at Auto Zone....It makes it ALOT easier.

Nope...I didn't make it to the lower idler. I'm about
to check it out after I change oil.

Thanks for the reply.

I just did a belt this weekend. You should have a little diagram that has it all laid out and labeled for you right on top of the grill. ine was right under the AC and upper idler pullies. Welcome to R-F
