So my truck is in need of a paint job... i brought this up when i was with a bunch of my friends, what they said i should do, blew my mind.

first of all, im that high school kid that doesn't care what anyone thinks of him, im just here to make people laugh, and just trying to get the heck outta there, so how ugly my truck would look really doesn't bother me...

my buddys said i should just get a bunch of cans of "spray on bed liner". i have no clue what this is. - they said it was like black spray paint, and would actually hold on the original paint job, so i wouldn't have to sand all of it down. at this point, im considering it.
ive always wanted to murder out my truck, and i think this may be a good way to do it. i googled a bunch of spray on bed liner stuff, and people do it to their bumpers and interior panels, and looks pretty cool.

so i guess im asking,
how stupid is considering this?
is there any chance in hell that this has any way of actually looking good?
how many cans would it take, anyway?

keep in mind that my friends said it as a joke, and it actually sounded like it could be cool. thats why im just wondering. ( no actual plans to do it in the future, unless i get massive "go for it")

Its been done and if done right can look good. Do a search for it or google it.

 

It would take ALOT of cans and it would probably look 100000x worse then what you have in a month or two. Its take ALOT of prep work to get that liner stuff to stick right and last.

I say leave the truck as it is or do something else.

 

the money you spend on that many spray cans and prep work you could have gone and get your entire truck line-x'd or rhino lined and that stuff will almost never come off and it looks awesome!

 

just spend the money and have it professionally done. you can get different colors and i think it looks pretty good for a beater. washing it will never work very well since it will be textured. the spray can idea would be bad for the whole truck. i have it on my bumpers and it only sticks as well as spray paint. its fine for bumpers since i like to run into trees and such so touchups are a sinch. plus if you get it professionally done you will have a lifetime warranty on it.

 

yeah dont waste your time with it. it's just going to chip and flake off with poor prep work. not to mention getting even coverage on panels is a pain and that stuff is such a mess and gets everywhere.

Do yourself a favour and just get flat black enamel spraypaint, some 220 grit sandpaper, some degreaser and you've spent about $100 on paint and material by now and just spraypaint the truck flat black.

Here check this out. This is my old truck. The entire truck was painted with spray cans in my driveway in a weekend. $120 paint job. I did however primer the truck first because I wanted the paintjob to last a little longer.



On this shot you can see the black looking a little faded on the bed. That's from the water always running down from the tonneau cover snaps and staining the paint. On the door, that's just literally elbow grease from my arm always rubbing on the door with my arm out the window.



So this is just proof that for $100 and a weekend with some spraypaint you can actually turn out a half decent looking paintjob.

 

No! Its like 2K to do a vehicle in line-x or rhino lining.

 

I plan to do the lower portion of my truck in rockerguard soon. I'm not going to do the plastic flares, but will do the rockers and everything from the lower body line down. I only plan to because my rockers and door bottoms are beginning to rust, even though the truck has been undercoated.

lol,my buddy showed me that like 2 weeks ago. That is awesome and its more unique because it's not black. I don't like the wheels, but the car is just sweet.

That Raptor lining is cool......in a truck bed, not on an Audi A4.....

 

That audi is dumb. SOOO much extra weight. I bet it is quiet inside though.

yeah, that audi is awesome. i really like how the windows are tinted out, so its just a flat black on to a flat white.

how much weight would bedliner be if painted on to a whole truck?

i know therre isnt an exact number, but just ball park figure.

and how well did that spray paint hold up?

im thinking of doing the same thing you did, downy, but with bedliner instead.

what do i have to do to make sure the paint wont look like trash? i know i have to do some sanding, but to what extent? to the meteal? or just the old coat of paint? what would happen if i didnt do any sanding, and just sprayed right over it?

 

It will not stick if you don't sand. You have to sand off the clear coat. You don't have to get to bare metal but you have to wet sand it and get rid of the clear.

There is no telling how much weight it will add. However much the gallon weighs minus the weight of the container is how much it will add. That is the only way to tell.

I have no clue. But I am guessing maybe 4 or 5.

Using water with the sand paper. Dip the sand paper in water and keep the surface wet while sanding.
