There is some confusion on the Taurus SHO engines, the 3.4L V8 is much different than the 3.2l V6

There is not a Rear Wheel Drive(RWD) transmission for the 3.4l SHO V8, there is for the 3.2l SHO V6, in fact 3.0l Vulcan tranmissions used in Rangers will bolt up to the 3.2l V6 from a Taurus

The bellhousing pattern for the 3.4l V8 is called:
Duratec V6 pattern
2.5L/3.0L Duratec V6 and 3.4L DOHC SHO V8 used this pattern

None of these engines was offered in a RWD vehicle, so no source for a RWD transmission

You can build an adapter for anything, but its not cheap for most people

3.4l SHO V8 was 235HP but only 230ftlb torque
3.2l SHO V6 was 220HP, and 215ftlb

The regular V8 swap for a Ranger is the 5.0l V8 because it is narrow so fits better, it has 215HP but a very respectable 280ftlb torque, so much better for the heavier Ranger
And thats stock, the 5.0l(302) engine has alot of upgrades available

The 2.5 V6 Duratec and the 3.0 V6 Duratec used the same bolt pattern - people swap them all the time. The 3.0 Duratec and the 3.0 Vulcan were options on the Taurus. Did they use different bolt patterns? The 3.4 is a 60deg V8 - a 2.5 V6 with 2 more cylinders.

Im pretty sure if what RonD told me was that they are different patterns because our trucks use M5ODR1 transmissions

Thats where the confusion comes in

3.0l Duratec and 3.0l SHO were both used in the Taurus, but have different trans bolt patterns

2.5L Duratec and 3.0L Duratec V6 and the 3.4l SHO V8 have same bolt pattern but never used in RWD vehicles so no RWD transmissions avaialble

3.0l SHO and 3.2l SHO V6 and the 3.0l Vulcan use the same bolt pattern, so RWD trans is available

The 3.0l Duratec uses whats called the Duratec V6 pattern

The 3.0l SHO uses whats called the Vulcan V6 pattern

There are quite a few engines that have the same displacement, so you have to focus on the type, Duratec, SHO, Essex, HSC, Vulcan, and cylinders, there are 2.5l 4cyl and V6

Ford bellhousing patterns found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...using_patterns

Strange that Ford developed two both the Duratec and Vulcan transverse V6s during the same time period, but used different bellhousing patterns. You can never tell what drives those decisions.

I thought about the SHO Engine also, but too many things popped up, i.e. transmissions the biggest problem.

AND when you consider a 5.0L and even modest upgrades the 5.0L will perform just fine.

Too bad the 3.4L V8 wasn't more compatible... that could be a great engine for the Ranger.

It can be done. Just have to grab the taurus computer and renumber the keys, and get appropriate oil pan, etc.
