Tail gate stolen
A great thread for the newbs. Also a tailgate lock is another good investment. With the tailgate down, your tail lights are an easy steal. With the gate locked, they'll stay in place.
I know the F150 tails were getting stolen a lot around here a few years back.

this might be a newb question but i cant get my head around it. with a truck cap like pictured above, even if you had a talgate handle if you lock the cap can you pull down the tail gate? it seems like the cap would prevent it but i just cant figure it out.
you could still open the tailgate with a cap on. the only part that hangs down is a thin piece of rubber. like mentioned, if it's gonna happen it's gonna happen.
andy, i never thought of that since i've used my fingers to pop that little piece of metal. however, a thief would be coming prepared like a boy scout.

Thanks So much Charles , I've racked my old brain for years ! It is so simple ! Thanks so much . It was just weeks after I bought my new 2006 4x4 $ 28,000 truck that a red supercab Ranger 4x4 pulled along side me in a dark parking lot . A male jumped out as I was sitting in my new truck waiting for my wife to come out of walmart . He quickly moved to the back of my truck I thought he may know me as I opened my door the girl with him screamed bludy murder an he flew back to his truck an burned rubber ???? I have the first year with the very large center ford oval on the tail gate ! When it gets warm tomorrow I'll be making mine theft proof ! I'm 63 , but if I can help in the future pls. call . This is the very best tip in a long time . Thanks Bud
I dont know if I'm the first to think about it but here is a great way to protect your tail gate from thiefs. On the right pivot head of your tail gate, just install a hose clip around it and make sure you finish tightening it from under.
No thief will think about having the tool to remove the gate to run away with. Just $2.00
and you save at least $800 and whole lot of hassle.
A new gate on primer, no side cables, no outside decorations not mentioning if you have a
plastic lining inside is certainly a lot of bucks. Oh yes, I forgot to mention you had to get it painted at your truck color...
Give this idea to all your Ranger and even other pickup friends.

Back when I used to work at Autozone we had problems with people stealing our Ranger tailgates. We had to start parking the trucks back to back at night so that they couldn't get the gate open.
I have to stop by there this weekend for brake pads. I will tell my old manager about this fix.

Have heard about, and have seen, lots of pick-ups that back up against walls to prevent tailgate theft.
Sad thing about it is that the thieves are "fellow drivers" of the same type of truck.
A good and simple idea - thanks for posting it.

I have one of these to prevent tailgate theft. Its pretty much a fancy hose clamp but it uses a special key to open and close it. Like the locking lug nuts.

i have had my tail gate stolen off my 86 chevy it was shaved and air brushed and also bedlined on the inside i was super pissed when it got stolen now it has a 5th wheel tail gate until i get around to making another one
I put on a pop n lock on mine. Works great and didn't cost much. Did this to keep big items that I have in my truck every now and then from getting stolen. This way the theives have to pick it up and over if they really want it and thats much harder than sliding it off the back. I will do the clamp thing too. Great idea!!
Seriously, good idea. I talked to my local pd in the little po-dunk town I live in and this happens 3-4x a week according to their vehicle theft unit. I told them about this and they're going to start spreading the news.
