Both are 4x4 SuperCabs w/5.4L's, are column shift (as opposed to the gey center console shift), have a tow package. Only slight differences such as the 2nd has dark leather int. vs. dark cloth int. in the 1st. The rest is pretty self-evident. Similar price.. the newer has comparable miles in relation to the '04. One of the few differences I can't seem to get over is the front valance and the grille (I know, petty differences). I've always liked the body-matched valance and grille look on the Ranger, so I'm partial to the '04.
This is a choice I've thought about since I decided to SAS my FX4. I've had a few times (just getting over one currently) where the FX4 has been down for a few while I fix/replace something. An F-150 would not only serve as a DD, but also down the road as a tower for the FX4. And while the 2wd 4-banger I currently have as my DD has been good to me thus far, I always thought that if a good opportunity presented itself I would look into it. And well, either of these seem damn good to me.. am I wrong? I also wouldn't bet on these sticking around for long, given the factors. It will mostly come down to which place would work with me on what they give for my 2wd. Am I wrong to think that CarMax would be the more worth-while party, as opposed to the Toyota-Scion?
Thanks for the input everyone.
Edit: I've since come acrossed an '05 STX 4x4. From the pictures it would appear to have a manual t-case. It has the lesser of the two available V8's, the 4.6L, doesn't have the swanky interior of the FX4, and comes out to 3k less than the '04. Now, the 4.6 would improve my MPG (14/18 for the 4.6, 12/16 for the 5.4). My only thought is what is the opinion of the 4.6L coupled with the size/weight of the F-150? Might I be disappointed in the long-run with the performance? I can't ignore the couple extra mpg's I'd get, and perhaps a V8 is a V8, but I can't get past just how small of an engine that seems for a V8. Again, input/opinions are appreciated.

As much as I see your point, my dad's got an FX2 F150, and I really like the console shifter. To me, it's easier to shift, more like a car. I wouldnt go so far as to call it geeeey, just a preference of some people...

Coming from the owner of an 07 F150
In my opinion go out and check local dealers-the 08s are out now and they need to get rid of the 07s and there are plenty of them left-I got mine 25% off the MSRP and they may do better being the 08s are out, and you may be able to get in one for a little over what those used ones cost for simialr package
But if you wish to choose of the two you have selected either one is nice-your personal preferance
the 04 and up 5.4L engines have the 3V motor and on this note there is a big problem with the 3V engines from 04-07 with spark plugs. If you get either one of the two trucks you have listed I would immediatly change those plugs. There is countless problems with the bottom electrode of the plug breaking off in the head due to carbon build up and letting them sit for 50K + miles. If you do this do not just jump right into the plug change-there is actually a process to follow due to the ongoing problem with the plugs in the 3V engine. If you want more info on the plug problem PM me and I can send you the link to an F150 forum and you can read the countless problems with the plugs. Aside from that the F150 is an amazing truck and I highly recommend it.
