For Sale: '05 Tailgate (Grey)
actually with out the tail gate the air flow pushes down on the back of the truck (kinda like a wing does to a car) oppose to in a circular motion with the tail gate up, and that circular motion allows the airflow to go smoothly over the back of the truck with less drag.
im sure that makes no sense but yea.

Ok well guess i was wrong looks like mythbusters redid the tailgate up/down episode and got diff numbers
and mesh is the way to go
YouTube - Insert from MythBusters - Tailgate Up or Down 2 (from More Myths Revisited) fuel consumption test
my only complaint is i wonder if they used the same truck as in the original tailgate up/down episode
