The on the fly has had issues.. i had a 2002 and the e-tcase went out.
my manual one is great i know when its in gear. it gives me control and also alllowed for a nuetral setting

My whole thing is simlicity and reliability reasons...no bad switches...no bad shift motors....ALWAYS being able to put it into 4 w/o any electrical issues. And it's just plain bad *** and 'normal' back in the day.

Doesn't matter if you have a manual t-case, or an electronic one. A manual t-case can fail.
Either way, it's all about hubs for engagement. Hence why I have Warn manual hubs on the Ranger, and POSI LOCK A.D.S. (FTW) on the Dodge.
I think you are asking too much for your truck there OP, and definitely not giving enough info on it either. How many miles? Recent maintenance? Possible fouls with it?
