Yeah it would move when the rpm came up a little. As rpm dropped below about 1500 you could feel it slip out of gear but rev it just a little and it would slam back into gear. Not good.

Im going to sit down and make a list of what everything cost me once I get the truck back at end of the week. I have a feeling its gonna be alot but since I have spread it out over the last 5-6 months it shouldnt be to bad.

Got the truck back from the trans shop yesterday! Trans works great but had a few scares!

I pick the truck up and pull out onto the main road and something is clunking really bad.As I row the wheel left to right I get this super bad clunking from front end so I pull over. I guess somebody at the shop locked my one and only AVM hub in and I was feeling the Aussie. I have a feeling the locker is damaged from last years disaster day also because even on pavement with only one hub on the front I wouldnt think the front axle would clunk that bad with a hub locked in. I will look into that later.

I turned my turn signal on and I had smoke start pouring out around my hazzard button!! I freak and pull over so I can yank a battery cable but as I come to a stop the signal starts blinking and the smoke stops.....been fine since.

Even though it was fine when I put it back on, my fan clutch is now locked up tight. Truck sounds like a P-51 Mustang going down the road! Since Im done mudding with this truck now I think I mite go back to an electric fan setup.

Overall Im very happy to have it back on the road! Missed this POS! Today Im bolting all my skidplates back on,installing my Sirius crap, and getting my a/c recharged.

........keep your fingers crossed.

Awesome info. I'll have to keep this one saved so I can look back to it when I'm ready to start the Ranger.

Here is the one week update.

510 miles driven so far.

Multifunction switch has been replaced,a/c is blowing cold and so far not one issue with the motor or trans ...other than being on my third Autozone fan clutch which still never seems to disengage.Going back to an electric next.

The new motor is dead silent with no ticks, knocks or anything else.Once its warmed up it has a nasty idle that I could see not all people liking....I love it,reminds me of my old 5.0 cars. Truck still will not smoke the tires from a dead dig but once it hits 3500rpm and up there is not doubt this thing is making way more power than before! If I stuff it from a 45+ mph roll it accelerates like I still cant believe! I was shocked the first time I stuffed it to pass somebody !!

So far I am very happy with how it turned out. My trans rebuild seems to be holding up fine and even with all the engine mods I did I am happy to report it is getting the same 16mpg average to a tank of mixed driving as it did prior to me killing it 14 months ago. And that is still with the original O2 sensors in it, that dam fan clutch that never free wheels and my bed cover is not back on yet either. I am hoping that once I replace all the O2's, get that fan off the motor and put my bed cover back on I should get at least another 1.5-2 mpg out of it.

this motivates me to rebuild an old 2.9, but i don't like 4.0's to much, it red lines 1k less than my 2.9 and it has more power, but its heavier and the trade off doesn't seem worth it to me, or i would have gotten a 4.0 already and started rebuilding it.

since you have a 2.9 and a 4.0, which seems better to you on a weight to power ratio, on stock rebuild?

Stock manifolds for a little longer yet into the stock Y-pipe going to 3" pipe after cat into a 3" Magnaflow with a full 3" tailpipe. Sounds great.

The fan I hate tho.

I will get a vid in the morning for you.

BTW guys...I am one click away from ordering a tuner thru Underdog-Performance ,the RogueX3. This a good tuner and good place to deal with?

I would like to change my shift points, have a tune for towing,a mileage tune, raise my idle a bit and have the option to change the tunes myself in the future should I ever get a set of headers and other mods. I own a LM1 wideband meter and I have done my own tuning on my old 2.3t cars with my SDS standalone so I know my way around making a good tune.

Brian, you have brought hope to us that have the OHV. Hope that there are things to improve power lol..

would you say that the heads alone (if i were to get the complete ones) would make a noticable difference?

Only thing I can say for sure is the heads I got out of the box,as cast, were very rough and need alot of clean up work in the ports.Inside the bowls around the valve seats were left with sharp edges from them machining the heads for valve seat inserts. I would say if you were to bolt these on straight out of the box you prolly wouldnt feel a big differance, however, after just a little time on the bench these heads cleaned up great.

I think it has been proven these aftermarket heads are a much better casting so we shouldnt have to worry about them cracking like a stock casting. That being said I feel its worth every penny to have them worked over before they go on the motor so you get every bit of hidden power in the 4.0 OHV.

Here you go. Its weird how my camera picks up sounds I cant hear. You can here the valvetrain and belt tensioner in the vid but up close in person you can barely hear those things. And that dam fan.And the dogs. And the neighbor mowing. And the wind......

This is just idling in park.

I put an electric fan on and my bed cover one tank of fuel ago and it got 17mpg beating the **** out of it. My buddy has a 07 Quad cab Hemi Ram 4x4 and we were messing around last weekend and from a dig he blows me away but from any kind of roll race from 30mph and up the Ranger is door to door with him. I was impressed.

So far I love these General Grabber AT2's!! Glad I found the post about them before I went shopping.
