VIDEO OF MY TRUCK HOPPIN AND STUFF - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoV4...ature=youtu.be
(Update) Changed Oil, and put a brand new MAF sensor in still same issues only fix is unplugging MAF
Start
Alright welcome everyone my name is Robert and I am having the worst problems with my 1994 ford ranger when I bought her she ran like a god, the guy didnt tell me the real problems realized a while after the leaf springs were done for barley holding on one side and the other side rusted through the windshield had leak and other problems, I fixed all of this and she ran great for about 6 months or so and now recently I am having the worst problems.

Problem
Alright so I recently started having a problem where the truck would start fine but while driving I would have to push the damn accelerator because the truck would bogg like crazy and had trouble accelerating also threw a code 157 so I changed the fuel filter and she ran fine but I had another problem the truck was having a ton of black smoke, lights would flicker, truck would die while driving randomly. so I checked the mass air flow and bought some cleaner for it cleaned it hooked her back up and then she started jumping on the road and had the same issues as before it fixed nothing, so i decided to change the spark plugs maybe that was causing some of the issues, found out the spark plugs were definitly screwed up so once I changed it she ran fine for like 10min and then started with same issues again, so today i changed the idle air control and the alternator and now she shuts off even more than before i took it around the block its about a 3/4 mile and she shut off on me 3 times while not accelerting I dont have the bogging problem no more but now I have a small amount of smoke that comes from the engine white color and exaust is loud. so I tried another battery to see if maybe the battery was bad and of course that didnt fix it. The only thing I can think is maybe the mass air flow is bad, or I may have filled up the engine with to much oil. The guy who sold me the truck lost the original dip stick so he used one from another car so I picked up the right dip stick couple days ago from 94 ranger all these problems got worse after I topped off the engine with oil before I changed the fuel filter so maybe I put to much oil in it but I couldnt tell because the dumbass had a different dip stick in so maybe I screwed up the engine with all the oil in the begging so tomorrow im going to drain the oil and refill it with the exact amount and see if that helps I do have a oil leak somewhere around the pan under the truck the pan is covered in a very black goopy oil this was a problem months ago when the damn slave was junk and it was leaking all over the clutch I do have a brand new clutch havent put it in yet because one the process takes time because most of the trucks bolts on the exaust are rusted and very difficult to get to BTW I also changed the O2 sensors and that also didnt solve anything. This is begging to become very annoying because I didnt buy this truck for a project I bought it for a work truck and I have literally almost made this truck brand new with the amount of **** Ive changed in it ive probably got about 2500$ into it at this point I bought the truck for 2700$ from a dip **** who decided to lie to me (at the point I bought the truck didnt really have any clue about anything when it came to cars - now I have a decent amount of knowledge but still new to the game)

Welcome to the forum Robert

Yes, people selling used cars don't often included all the faults, and some will out right lie about things

First, what engine do you have, there were 3 options in 1994 Rangers?
2.3l SOHC 4cyl
3.0l Vulcan V6
4.0l OHV V6

Assume manual transmission

2WD or 4x4?

You have the last year with the EEC-IV computer, good unit but it is 25 years old now, not suggesting thats the problem just saying it was the last year

Good to post definition with the codes, no one has them memorized, lol
157 Mass Air Flow signal is/was low or grounded - MAF

This usually means a wire is grounded(shorted) or MAF sensor is broken
You need a Volt/ohm meter to test the wires first, if they are OK then replace MAF sensor

Cleaning the MAF was good but not what that codes means, this code usually indicates a dirty MAF sensor
159 MAF sensor is/was out of range - MAF

Changing the fuel filter and spark plugs was a good idea, always, on a used car

Yes, drain the oil and refill, then Mark current dipstick so you have a range, you can use a hacksaw to make lines or notches

Black or grey smoke can be too much fuel or too much oil

Need engine size to continue

Hey thanks for responding yes it is a manual and its a 4.0 v6 ranger xlt the 4x4 does not work on the vehicle as the light in on 24/7 when car is on and it never turns off or changes into 4x4 its normal. Yeah it shows a 159 code now after cleaning the maf the 157 code disapeared I have duct tape raped around the intake tube that is connected to the maf because it had a crack in it for beign 25 years old the plastic dried out I would just go and buy a new one of these but for this year ranger the piece of plastic cost around 150-200$ I went to a junk yard and of course every single one of the rangers had this piece missing I assume for high resell value. at this point after changing all I have im pretty sure everything on this truck is original other than the obvious stuff the computer could always be a issue but i would be confused why all a sudden it put out on me its also the standard cab just driver and passenger seat no back seats thats really all I can think of thanks for the info Im pretty sure on that intake I have no air leaks so maybe Ill reclean the maf or maybe its bad im not sure but before I cleaned it the first time it had a ton of black crud on it and after cleaning it, it looks good as can be I dont think the truck is spewing out gas smoke just for the reason that I have been screwing around with the truck for about a month and a half now and only the smallest amount of gas has been used when looking at the gauge.

(The air intake thing) I am currently looking for one at junk yards I am really not in the mood to spend 150-200$ on a damn plastic piece I could always use a cold air intake tube but would rather not because it could change how the truck operates for the worse, I ducted taped it very good just to make sure that It wouldn't be causing any of the issues when trying to fix it.
