Alternate site url..

It is my understanding that a few of our Ranger friends, like Adrian (SuperSonicFX4) are having trouble accessing this site because they work for uncle sam and he blocks sites w/ the word 'forum' in the URL. Any chance an alias could be set up for www.ranger-forums.com. I'm far from a networking/Internet wiz, but I thought such things were possible. Two names that resolve to the same IP?! Sk0t, D, is this possible?

It's very possible. The issue arises with the forum software. We could do another DNS entry, but once you start getting into the forum itself, it will revert back to name set in the software itself.
Let me look into some options to see if I can figure out a way around it. Sadly, I know it's a problem, but there's probably not much we can do about it. :(
They can, however, still surf the site (using the IP address to thet site I posted on djayenos.com), if I'm not mistaken. They just can't log in.

But what about the "forum" codeword in the url?
https://www.ranger-forums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=639&highlight=
That would be even harder to get rid of, methinks, because it's inherant to the software used to run the site.

In Adrian's case (and AJ as well, I believe), that's not an issue. It seems that whatever the software the government is using only checks DNS names. The reason I say this is because D's site, my site, this site, and a few others are all on the same server. They can get to D's site and my site fine. It's the site with "forum" in the DNS name that's causing problems.
There is possibly another problem, and it's one that Christian would have to take care of. It might not be a problem with the name of the site, per se, but rather a problem with the registrar with whom Christian registered the domain name. If you were to ping djayenos.com, drsk0tevil.com and ranger-forums.com, you'd notice that ranger-forums.com has a different IP address, despite it being on the same server as djayenos.com and drsk0tevil.com.
And, for yet a further example, take a look at this:

Mostly Chinese to most people. But it does show the different IP addresses and different DNS servers used.
What I am indeed curious about though is that ns1.quickerdns.com resolves to the same IP address that djayenos.com and drsk0tevil.com are on. I've emailed D asking him out of curiousity on that.
But, in short, I don't think it's going to be an easy fix regardless. But, I can tell you it's not the forum in the directory portion of it, but rather the forum in the DNS name, if it's a problem on their end.

Basically what it comes down to, is that the "forums" word in Ranger-Forums.com is what is doing it. It really probably has nothing to do with the "forums" directory on the web server. That would be an easy fix if that was the case.
To get rid of the problem there really isn't much you can do short of registering a new domain that directs to this site, but then you run into some coding errors in the php, because it is hard to set up two or more different url's to point to one forum (not that hard, but it is tedious).
You can use the direct ip address to the site, or if you are on 1and1 servers you can use their lotsofnumbers.onlinehome.us domain to direct to the forums. There are a few ways around this, but most of them are very annoying to actually sit down and troubleshoot. You could have login problems, thread view problems, etc.... You never know until it is done, and you have the time to get on and work on it.

this site is not hosted on 1and1, only the domain was registered there. this site is being hosted by a new company called "nocturnix" which is owned by "djayenos", a member here.

Yes sk0t you are correct about the whole we can surf but not log in. I surf the site using the IP address that you gave us on D's site. I found out that you are also correct in the whole having the word forum in the address, the governments firewall prevents this from going through. However it also does that with sites like Yahoo mail and I have found a way to backdoor the firewall on that so just give me time.

About the hosting, how do you like the control panel? Bandwidth good and fast? Just curious, I may be looking to switch servers soon.
