How important is the radiator lower air deflector?

I am replacing my leaky radiator in my 1998 Ranger, and I noticed that the lower air deflector / splash shield was missing. I have no idea what happened to it, and it will cost about $99.00 to replace it.
So, can I leave it off, or will it cause damage?

No damage, just leave it off

Missing air director

Thanks for the feedback. It seems that I have been replacing just about everything in this truck since I bought it, so if a part won't hurt if it's missing, then great.
