Natural safety switch
Natural safety switch
I have a 1998 ranger 4.0 4x4. Fior about two months i have had a problem with i think neutral saftey switch. I have changes the switch and relays. It will start for a bit but then it won't. I could change relays around and it would sometimes start. Or even just pump the clutch with key turned to try to crank sometimes that works . I can't figure it out. Anyone got any suggestions.

First, when you turn the key on and to START does it feel OK, and does turning it to ACC work, i.e. does radio work in ACC
The ignition switch under the steering column can get worn out so intermittent in START or key cylinder is not "pulling" rod all the way to START, every time
Do you know if you have an alarm/anti-theft system?
Usually has keyless entry, i.e. Fobs
1998 can have one done at factory or by dealer, or even 3rd party(previous owner)
Wiring diagram for manual trans below
If there is anti-theft, then there is a 2nd relay, usually in the cab, that activates the starter relay in the engine fuse box
You can unplug the clutch switch and put a jumper wire between white/pink and pink wires, and leave it unplug and then test it that way for a few days, you can't shift to 4Low with it this way
You can pull out the Starter Relay in the engine bay fuse box, and test it's base with a volt meter or test light
Ground the test light or meter
test each slot in the base
only one will have 12v, from fuse #5, 50amp
Then have someone turn the key to START and hold it there, clutch pedal down or jumped
Another slot will now have 12volts, from ignition switch, find it, then have them wiggle the key or repeatedly release it and turn it to START until you are satisfied it is always working
In the end it could be the Starter relay/solenoid mounted on the top of the starter motor that's the problem, it happens
