I know oil is a big topic that comes up in alot of posts on other sites. And when someone new gets a truck and they find a forum on the net then that is most of the time one of the many questions they will ask. Maybe it could go under the gear and axle forum? :D

Oil a slippery subject indeed. So many choices so many claims an extremely rich market to say the least. My top picks are as follows:

#1: Lucas oil and additives(Upper Cylinder Lube, Oil stabilizer)
This is the absolute best you can get but it is expensive and hard to find.
#2: Royal Purple
Extremely good synthetic oil a little easier to find than Lucas and easier on ur wallet.
#3: Castrol
Easy to find, different blends for different budgets, lasts a little longer than advertised(not much though).
#4: Mobil
A little on the high side price wise, not too many blends to choose from either, if u find ur blend of this oil usually it's in a 5 quart jug.
#5: Pensoil
decent oil at a decent price, Only has 3 blends availible(High Mileage,Regular and Synthetic) a decent choice for stock applications.
#6: Valvoline
Can find it damn near anywhere, extremely cheap(U get what u pay for.)
and it does hold up pretty good under certain conditions.
#7: Gas Station Oils (Exxon,Chevron and Marathon branded oils)
These oils are too high price for what you get and usually they void factory warranties (if you're worried about that sort of thing).
#8: Stock Oil (The oil that they use at the Factory)
Some of these oils are good but some also damage ur engine in the long run.
That is how they can get you to into trouble. They can cause enough damage to where they try to con u into buying a new vehicle and also the service writer will tell you one thing the tech will tell you another thing. There's a mixed bag concerning this.
#9: Torco Racing Oils
Doesn't tell you that there's only 3 blends to choose from, Way too high on the price tag (it's around $10 dollars a quart without shipping!) 9 times out of 10 u usually have to go online to get it, and above all else 99% of the time they don't tell you that they mainly are used for highend imports like rolls royce, bmw, mercedes etc.
#10: Quakerstate (Dead last pick)
Liquid crap in a bottle, it just takes up shelf space, u can't give it away. If sold it's usually some 90 year old man who's brand loyalty is at an extreme high and he doesn't know any better,He also refuses to learn. above all else the oil is way too high. It is worth about $.02 cents a quart. and on this note alot of places like Oriely's, Advanced Autoparts, Autozone and Napa have just about quit carrying it because it sucks. Alot of rangers usually come with 5w20 Change that to 10w30 and it will give you a signifigant mpg increase and if you use synthetic you can go a little longer(not too much though) between oil changes.

^^^lmao!!

On a serious note though, we will probably never have an oil section just for the simple fact that everyone has a favorite and that leads to arguments.

For example, I run amsoil and in my family, we have probably put a million miles on our vehicles running amsoil with no problems. Some on here though think its junk, and you can't change peoples minds (most of the time).

Well I prefer Castrol myself, that is the choices that I made as a technician of course. Not every one agrees with me and that is kool. I've seen some vehicles reach beyond 1 million miles on those oils I mentioned and some reach the same on Walmart's brand of oil as well. It is the only version of brand loyalty that is left. For example i have a friend who is a die hard ford fan. He just got a New Honda Civic Hybrid just to help with his fuel bill. Some of these imports do excellent on fuel and cheap oil.

$3.50 a quart!? try $6.50+ a quart for Castrol Syntech at walmart. That is Cheap to me at least. Valvoline/Havoline is basicly the same oil. They're both owned by Texaco to the best of my knowledge anyway. If you can get it in Walmart chances are it is found in the most unexpected places you'd think. Valvoline is it pretty good? I have not used it in years.

SR1 series oils are "Recommended for stock, tuned or modified street, light truck and sport vehicles..." while the SR5 oils seem to be aimed at the exotic, highly modified and high performance applications.

On a side note: Torco has been working with Edelbrock (probably just lets Edelbrock put their name on the bottle) and can be bought for about $1 cheaper - Basic low zinc Edelbrock synthetic is $8.99/quart vs $10.00 for the Torco SR1

I just can't bring myself to lock this thread. Maybe someone will bump it up again in a couple more years.
