Ranger-Forums Server Update

Ranger-Forums will be moving to a new server within the next few weeks. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up and hopefully this will be a smooth transaction.

Please be patient with us as this move occurs.

Yes If you want to do something to improve the sites performance Contribute! It is only 12 bucks a year and it really helps the site out as far as upgrades to the server and keeping RF ad free.

Other than that RF maybe down for a day or two or 3 depending on how the move goes.

IMHO, you should setup the server, import everything to it, check everything out, and only then change the DNS to point to the server. Doing it that way results in absolutely no down time.

If you need any help let me know.

Hopefully that happens on the weekend since the only time I'm online is at work. Still no internet at the new place

RF will still be down because not everyones DNS will update at the same time. But your right that is how it will be done before the DNS is changed. still could be some downtime.

thanks for the offer! hopefully its an easy transition.

EDIT: Damn you beard. Beat me on both posts. Haha....

Glad to hear we got the money together. Any specs on the server for the geeky ones of us? Or did they not share? I suppose a server farm might not share details like that.... I wouldn't know though as I've never worked with one.

Registering for Contributor Status can be done on your User CP page.

1) Click the Home link on the upper left.
2) On the next page, click User CP, which should be right below where the Home link is.
3) Select "Paid Subscriptions" under the Miscellaneous heading on the next page.

From there it's a pretty self explanatory walk through.

That shouldn't be affected. The database storing who's a contributor and not should be transferred over. I don't think they are upgrading vBulletin or anything like that. It's just a server transfer due to the fact we are so big.

Yes and no. DNS propagating times have significantly improved, in the past year or so of setting up servers/domains I haven't waited more than 5 minutes for a DNS update; and that speed has been shared with those I know also. That is a good point though, in a community this large there will surely be some people who have slow DNS updating times.

You don't need to rely on a DNS update though. What you can do is when you are ready to hit the "send traffic to the server" switch, is change the files on this hosting account (via htaccess) so that if anyone is sent to this host instead of the new server, they are immediately redirected to the server to its IP address. Doing so completely avoids the DNS update, and does so without effecting the users.

So basically you are setting it up so if they go to ranger-forums.com the domains DNS sends them to the new server, if it sends them to the old server the old server then redirects them to the new server. Either way, they end up at the new server. End result = no downtime.

Yup that will work too. We try to keep it to a minimum as does everyone. I am just giving the worst case scenario.

haha

Ya dns changes can take up to 48 hours I believe but ive done some that seem almost instant, I have had one take about 4 hours and another about 12 hours. So I think it all depends if the internet is having a good day lol. Are there going to be any new features or layout when we go to the new server?
