towing a 4x4 1998 Ford Ranger

Can you safely tow a Ford Ranger on a dolly with two wheels on the ground for long distances, as long as it is switched over to 2x2 and in neutral?

Welcome to the forum

If its a Manual transmission then yes, Automatic NO, NO, NO

Ranger 4x4s do have a Neutral in the transfer case, for electric shift you needed to add a Neutral Shift kit that shifted transfer case to Neutral and had a green LED that would come on to indicate Neutral
Not sure if you can get those kits any more
With transfer case in Neutral you can tow with 4 wheels down or 2 wheels down

If you have manual hubs you could tow automatic with rear wheels up on dolly, although it can get a little squirrelly with weight at the rear, so not great for longer distances
