they make your truck worse. I got one for free from K&N and ended up selling it on craigslist. huge waste of money, even if you find a used one for like $40. significant loss of power, specially in the summer months causing the IAT to go higher. I went from flooring it and the truck slowly taking off with the K&N to flooring it and spinning both rear tires with the stock air box.
this video will sum it up

I'm new here and haven't shared much of my history. I'm been retired since 2006. I retired after 28 years working under the Pinstar(Chrysler,Dodge,Jeep) Its much small these days. I worded in R&D and the last 10 years I worked at the Conner Ave. Plant. That is where the Dodge Viper and Chrysler Prowler were produced. I had a bunch of fun over the years.
I had the opportunity to test cold air intakes and throttle body spacers. We used the chassis dyno there at the plant that was used to test run the Vipers on before the body work went on. We found that these items do work. On some vehicle's the results are greater than others. Some of the vehicles we tested there was very little change, others a great deal of improvement was noted. We where just doing a quick one day test, so no data was collected. But you just don't slap these parts on a vehicle and slam the hood and go. You need to make sure the vehicle is in a great state of tune. No driveability issues, a clean throttle body. A free flowing exhaust helps these products work.
The company's that make and sell these parts spend thousands and thousands of dollars testing before going to market. If they didn't work they wouldn't be able to sell them. Another thing to consider I live at sea level. I'm 30 miles from the coast. I have install both on the 97 Ranger 2.3L 5spd I just picked up. I'm getting great MPG's but most noticeable I can start out in 2nd gear without lugging. I have had the same experience with my 99 Jeep TJ 4.0L 5spd 4X4 Start off in 2nd no lugging. I'm not doing that at every take off but once in a while, I get caught day dreaming or not paying attention and take off in the wrong gear. Hey I'm 60 just starting to get a little old. Ken
