yeah i'd just like to say i change all my own oil and this is why: about two years ago we took my parents 91 suburban to walmart for a standard oil change no problem right. well then later on we realized it was losing a qaurt of oil or so every week or so so we crawled under it to take a look and low and behold somebody had overtightened the draing plug and cracked the oil pan. so we took it back to the same walmart we got it changed at but by this point we had already tossed the reciept and since we didnt have a reciept to prove we had been there our information was mysteryesly(sp) not in the system and when we told them that this was where we got it changed they basically said better luck next time and keep up with your reciept.......so yeah i dont care if i bust a few knuckels at least i know quality work is being done

 

Ahahaah great post I was laughing the whole time. I did my own oil change by myself for the first time a couple weeks ago. (yes im proud of myself :-)

Lets see took me about 20 minutes to get the damn oil plug out, dropped the wrench in the oil pan when it came out and then spilled oil on the ground because the pan wasnt directly under the flow. Next I went to get the oil filter out and that took me about an hour. Had to take my brothers car to get an oil wrench came back and had a hard time getting the filter off. After a few cuss words and throwing the oil wrench I finally got it off. After that everything went pretty smoothly and yes I snuck a little oil ridden cardboard into Wednesdays trash!!!!!

 

Every so often Cosco & Walmart/canadian tire have a good sale on synthetic oil so like

$20 oil
$8 filter

$28 + some scrapes and light burns!

 

i dont trust the shops any more... when i bought my truck used the first oil change was free. it had a motorcraft oil filter... The dealer changed the oil but not the filter. Went to do it myself the next 3000 miles filter was stuck. finally got it off didnt notice the gasket was stuck up there put new filter on, put oil in started truck...30 seconds later oil spewing from the filter... quickly shut off engine then realized i hate shops so i do my whole families oil.

 

Haha this thread is great. Btw i also change my own oil if i can rebuild an engine i can change my own oil :P.

 

My uncle worked at the Juffy Lube here and a guy drained the oil out of the car we was working on got sidetracked and forgot to put oil in it. The lady made it to the end of the parking lot before the motor seized up. Needless to say that guy didn't work their any longer and she got a new motor.

here in reno, since i live in a dorm, i have my truck done at a local off road shop.
good guys, friends with most of em, and i get a nice little discount there.

and i keep the money local. can''t go wrong. they even wash the vehicles when they're done.

Wow, $20 for an oil change? Most shops around here charge between $7.99 and $12.99.

Course you get halvoline and some valvecraft filter, but sometimes I just dont have the money to do it myself...so I pay to have it done...That doesn't make any sense...lol

 

Having my truck gone over by a highly qualified mechanic is what I'm paying for. He looks the whole truck over and lets me know what's needed. This last time he pointed out dry rotting tires and windshield wipers should be replaced. So if he saved me from having an accident from the tires blowing out, he earned my money.

They also top off all the fluids and tire pressure. They also put a paper floor mat in my truck, so as not to dirty up my carpeting.

 

Last time i had my oil changed mechanic *****ed at me for putting filter on too tight bad enough it has a lifter knock so i put it on extra tight for safety so i wouldnt sling a rod.

 

Good point. About 3 or 4 oil changes ago, while my mechanic was doing the 20 point inspection that comes with the oil change, he found my leaf spring shackle was cracked.

Had he not told me, I probably still wouldn't know to this day.

I'm mechanically inclined, but I'm just too lazy to always do routine maintenance on my vehicle, so I'll have someone else do it.

 

Well just getting the truck up on a lift is very helpful. You can see many things you normally wouldn't think about. Having a trained mechanic go over the truck is a good thing. My guys have certificates all over the walls, and a nice, big, clean professional looking shop.

Yup 25 bucks full synthetic change and a good filter, 20 min later I am good to go and I know it was done right, Its amazing how many beers a man can drink in an oil change though isnt it boys

 

I don't have a garage and I have a gravel driveway, so getting the truck up on a lift is a good thing for me.

You can add the cost of a garage and tools to the above oil change joke.
