Towing capacity of Rangers?

I'm curious about towing with these. I own the 1962 Mercury Wagon shown below and it's in Colorado springs and I need to move it to El Paso. When I was talking about renting a truck, several people thought the 1992 Ranger (which has the 3.0 V6 with a five speed) would tow it OK.

Seems like a big load for the truck to me but then again Europeans tow huge crap all over the place with little tiny cars. I figure this car weighs between 5,000 - 6,000 lbs.

The trip is about 600 miles and there is at least two very steep mountains to cross.

What do you think, Doable or "go get a bigger truck"?

How steep a mountain we talking?

Breaks in top shape on the ranger?

What's the minimum speed limit on the highways?

I don't recommend it, especially with a 3.0 manual. A 4.0 automatic would be marginal for that much weight. You definitely need brakes on whatever you're towing because the Ranger brakes aren't going to get it done alone.

5-6000 pounds? with a 3.0 5spd? NO. Thats pushing the limits of a 4.0 auto

The bigger the better, no way it would be safe! Rent a F-250 from U-haul you'd be better off.
Good luck,

hell no dude...that car weighs around 5000 lbs but you also have to take into consideration the weight of the trailer a 4.0 auto can only tow around 5800 lbs

You will burn up your tranny and heavily risk being rolled off the highway towing something that wieghs more than a ranger.
