I'll be having the brakes relined tomorrow. This will be the first brake job I've not done myself since 1953.

On the rear drum brakes the rear shoes are rivited but the front shoes are bonded. Why the difference?

I've requested NO rivited shoes - any reason I should withdraw that request?

 

you might not have a choice between rivited or bonded for the shoes...IIRC most shoes are rivited

 

it is hit or miss on some vehicles whether you get riveted or bonded, most ranger pads are bonded, and fox mustang front pads are riveted. i think 99% of ranger shoes are riveted

 

^x2 the rear pads on my dads VW are rivited and theyre disc...im not sure about the front though

 

It is my understanding that bonded brake shoes transfer heat better and seems to be preferred over riveted. I am pretty sure my rear Raybestos Super Stop shoes are bonded.

I have never seen riveted brake pads.

 

i wouldn't worry about having riveted shoes for the rear but i wouldnt use riveted pads in the front, if they even still make them. i havent seen riveted pads since i changed pads on my 86 about 12 years ago. riveted shoes are fairly common though.

 

I've always been dead set against rivets because they can tear up the drums if you get careless and don't inspect soon enough.

It's being done at the Stealer but their price was more than competitive (beat the competition) and the rep said I could have bonded linings but they'd have to go out of house to get em. Maybe I should figure they know their stuff and just take what they give me?

Only one time have I seen a bonded lining come loose and that was, I think, from running my rear axle into the lake launching boats then setting the parking brake against the wet lining and leaving it a long time. In fact I recall the brake on one side wouldn't release - had to drive it off - so maybe that broke the bond. That's what happened anyway not sure why.

All the big rigs I ever worked on had rivited linings but they got way hotter than any 4-wheeler rig.

 

Over the years I've had more than a few bonded shoes come loose but never riveted ones , unless they were ignored for too long .
Granted , they wear down and can groove the drum , but if you let them get that far you are not inspecting your vehicle properly.
I'll take riveted shoes over bonded any day.
