2004 Ford Ranger Value

How much do you think a 2004 Ford Ranger Edge SuperCab 2wd is worth (rough estimate)? It needs wheel bearings, ball joints, new tires, and has a few small door dings. I didn't catch the mileage, but will be going to look at it this afternoon. The guy wants $5,500 private party. Obviously I'll try to talk him down, but is that a good deal? I have ran several used car value guides and have formed my own opinion, but also want your opinion as well.

Offer him $5000 since you will have to put some money into it.

That's the thing, I'm not sure. I will find out this afternoon, but I'm guessing around 100,000. That would be average mileage for the year model.

I could swear I saw him with the back doors open so if I am right it is four-door.

ah. i'd definitely try 4500. worst he can say is no. when you find out you can get a better idea at what you should pay also depending on if you'll do the work yourself or not. if you're not, lowball more haha

I'll do all the work myself. What do you think it is worth assuming I am right? He paid off a loan for someone who was going to lose it so he bought it for $3200. I understand he wants to make a profit, but I want to get it for a price I can as well if I don't decide to keep it.

id say you should pay around 4k for it 5k max. if you buy it and do all the work on it you should make a nice profit. I bought that green 98 for $900 and sold it for 2900 after i put work into it. (upper and lower ball joints, brakes, inner and outer tie rods)

if you decide you don't want it you could turn a profit. btw that 98 had 198k on it lol

Like Pedro said, Milage is a big factor. Avg mileage (i'm sure you know) is 12k a year. so it should be around 84k miles for a fair market value. anything under that milage is worth more, anything over is worth less.
Also, you said it needs work? Factor in the price of parts. say about $500 for tires. another $150 for bearings, and another $150 for ball joints. Then another $100 bucks cause you might need it aligned.
Door dings are door dings. its rare you find a car without some kind of small dent in it.
I'd also say $4500, not really a penny more since its probably a 3.0

It has 109,000 (84,000 to 96,000 is average depending on when in 2004 it was built) and is a 2 door SuperCab. Is in very good condition for the age of the vehicle. Interior is very nice. He said the least he would take is $5,000. Hmm...

Seems like a good deal. I got my 2004 Edge for 6500 last year. Of course, it only had 93k, was in pristine condition mechanically and visually, and came with a really good powertrain warranty. 5000 sounds good, but you can talk him down. As long as it's a 4.0, I would jump on that.

afterbuying this 2 door truck, you may wish to upgrade the seats. While comfy, they get dirty FAST and... well leather seats out of a mountaineer are WAY better. Plus, the stock seats dont go forward very far... as where the leather ones, I could put a 36in CRT tv in the backseat now =P
