My 2000 4.0 OHV just turned 160,000 miles today and it burns no oil.I change it at 5,000 mile intervals and it is perfectly full on the dipstick right before I do an oil change.I have never added a drop of oil between oil changes.I have used Mobil 1 5W30 since it had 1,000 miles on it so I don't think I am getting much wear.I would guess it is more of a piston ring problem or maybe valve seals.

hehe.....least itz not like mine. I noticed when I changed the oil today the front main is starting to leak worse. And I just put a synthetic blend 5w-30 in it. We'll see how long that lasts. Not to mention the lifter noise. I think you and I should put some V8s in these trucks. My swap is looking like it might have to be sooner than planned.

Yeah. Mine doesn't burn any oil right now so I am probably gonna go the cheap route and just replace the seal. It shouldn't be terribly diifficult. I'm told the lifters should be fine for a while. I really don't feel like going through all the trouble to do them too. But yeah if you got the block get it in there.

Are you sure it is the lifters? The 4.0 OHV timing chain tensioner tend to make alot of noise.Mine does.Sometimes sounds as if the engine is going to explode but it runs fine.Oddly enough,it seems worse just after an oil change.I was going to pull the front of the motor apart and fix it but just haven't had the time.I need the truck for work.I was considering a motor swap due to the miles but this one runs so good I may just fix it and see how many miles I can get out of it.Considering the miles on it now I don't think 300,000 miles is out of the question.
