Anyone here do a roll on paint job?

I might be getting a strong running truck soon that needs some body work and a paint job. I have to do it cheap but I do not want to sacrifice quality and longevity. While looking for ideas on the interwed I found some videos of people rolling Rustolum on their vehicles. I am quite impressed by the results. But, how well does it hold up? I have seen cheap paint even with proper prep work give out and fade in a short amount of time. Does it hold up to buffing? I would like to have a wet clear coat look when done.

i know guys who have done it. prep work is key. it won't look like a $5,000 paint job, but for what it is you can't go wrong IMO. i don't know how it handles buffing, their trucks aren't show vehicles.

I'd think you'd be better off putting your paint on in multiple light layers with a hardware store airless sprayer and sanding between layers than using a roller. The only way to get a clean shiny clearcoat finish is to apply it correctly with high quality paint.

Like a Wagner Power Painter.....But,I think you should try to rent(or borrow) a compressor & spray rig if you don't have access to one....It'll give you a much better result.:good:

I already have everything I need for a higher quality paint job. I am just intrigued by how well some of those roll on jobs turned out.

I do understand what you mean but I'd be willing to bet that the pictures hide a world of flaws that you'd see in person and that would **** you off...especially if you want fairly good results. When we do the work ourselves little things that others might not notice are glaringly obvious to us.

I know what you mean. I figured it was worth asking about though.

I did a brush camo job on a Toyota Corolla that turned into a field car and was finally burnt one drunken weekend. The paint job turned out pretty good for what it was actually...and considering that some of the paint was water based. I bought the car with under 1000 miles and it's final mile was 293K. I got tired of looking at the damn thing and it just wouldn't die.

Some of the roll on paint jobs are actually pretty 'decent' considering you know its a 100 dollar or less paint job. Another method would be the 50/50 rustoleum/ spirits technique in a cheap hvlp gun...still under 100 bucks but much more even, and as previously mentioned, hard work on the prep will earn you a lot in end result. A few people have said the second method holds up through the car wash and everything as long its allowed to properly dry and cure first

That is the method I have been leaning towards lately.

My cousin did a roll on. Lives in Hawaii on big island. 94 something ranger rust bucket.
It actually looked very good. Rolling gives a nice thick stipple finish...has a tough body armor feel. And easier to blend than spray or brush.
It works...you just got to live with the stares and laughter.

That has to be the best video I have seen on this subject. I do not agree with a couple minor details, but for the most part it looks worth trying. Any paint job is going to be time consuming. But at a fraction of the cost, the roll on job miht be worth it.
