clicking noise coming from engine

I just bought a 1990 2.9 ranger. It runs good when you first start it and drive around the city, but when I get on the freeway and start going fast it starts to make a clicking noise, and when I slow down and let it sit it continues to make the noise until I turn it off and let it sit for a while. What could the noise be? Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

is it a five speed? I have a 3.0 but my block separator plate is slightly warped and i know that when i get any kind of blow by wind on it (high speed) it rubs the back of the flywheel a bit.

Its an automatic, but the thing is once it starts clicking it will continue to click even if I have it idling in my driveway. Its not until i turn it off and let it sit for a while then restart and it will stop clicking.
