cant find the sound I'm looking for out of my 3.0 ranger..

I've looked up all the ones most people recommend like the Thrush and Super 44 and 40, the 10 and the cherry bomb glasspack but I can't find the sound that I want.

To me all of those sound like sports cars and not like a big lifted truck. VIDEO @ 1:29

This is just my opinion, but I can't stand how that sounds. I want something that sounds deep all the way through and doesn't crackle and pop. I want it deep and loud if that's possible.

I think the first truck sounds closer to the sound I'm looking for out of my truck (not sure if that's possible since I don't have a 5.0 but figured I'd try)

Any ideas?

*also I live in Maryland and I don't think straight pipe or anything like that is legal here

Straight pipe is as close as you'll get. Mbrp is closest to that.

Either way, its a shitty 3.0 v6. Its not gonna sound deep. Its gonna sound ricy

Principles are simple but getting the low sound isn't.

If you look at a guitar or piano the larger the "string" the lower the note.
If you look at a pipe organ the larger the pipe the lower the note, the same air goes into the smaller pipe and larger pipe, but the notes that come out are different.
Trumpet and Tuba.........

Tweeter is small speaker(high frequencies), woofer large speaker(low frequencies), so that's the general principles, larger = lower frequency

Lower frequencies travel farther than higher frequencies because they are longer "waves",
This is why you can hear the subwoofer thumps of the guy 4 cars behind you at the stop light but can't hear the song(higher frequencies), lol.

So when "they" design a muffler they want to muffle the low frequencies, because that is the hardest "noise" to get rid of.

You don't want to change the headers(exhaust manifold) to the Cats, that part of the system is designed for best performance(creates low pressure at exhaust valves), but after the Cats you can use a larger diameter pipe size, just like a pipe organ, long and straight as possible.
Mufflers are an issue but some are designed to leave a bit of the low frequencies, designer mufflers, lol.
But the smaller pipe after the muffler will pretty much kill what little low frequencies are left

Flo-pro mufflers are pretty good at canceling the higher tones while magnifying the lower ones. Check out the youtube video of flo-pro ranger. Its from kinneys muffler shop and i have had two flo-pros on my truck and they definitely sound good it still gets kinda ricey at high rpm's but it is a v6 so no muffler can change that.

See if you can find a DynoMax Muffler sound clip.

There are different models of the DynoMax line try them all.

Then there is Borla, not too bad either.

Both of these has deeper sound but not sure of the 3.0 sound.

Luck to Ya and post what you find.

Like I sai . Any exhaust ive heard in person on a 3.0 has that sound. Its unavoidable. Closest you will get to what you want with still having a muffler is the mbrp. So many people go cheap with flow master etc. And think it sounds amazing.

It doesn't lol

Cheap or not i can promise that neither of my 2 flo pro's sound anything close to that sound except above about 3 grand. It is much deeper at idle and during acceleration.

I have considered going with the Dynomax cat back on mine. It looks like they offer one kit with an Ultraflow and one kit with a SuperTurbo. The Ultraflow is a great muffler (have them on a Mustang), but maybe too loud for the Ranger. The Superturbo is a nice mellow muffler. I don't want it to sound goofy, so the stock exhaust remains on the truck. I really would just want improved flow and not much increase in volume of sound.

You need to remember you have a V6 not a V8 and the V6 just doesn't have the sound.

Good luck but there is alway a V8 install to get that deep rumble sound.

I cut the stock muffler off of my 3.0L and it has a nice growly idle, not terribly loud but still is very audible from 30 feet away. Cheapest exhaust mod you can do. And it's not loud enough to alert Johnny Law of your presence either.
