My 2005 4.0 4x4 was getting about 20hwy and 16city when it was stock with 31"s. I gave it a body lift and put on 33" mudders a few months ago. Now I am getting about 16hwy and 12city.

It seems like it dropped considerably with the new tires. I put on the tires back in October, so maybe the switch the winter gasoline hurt me a little too. I have a new set of sparkplugs to put in, and am thinking about changing the fuel filter to see if that helps at all.

Also considering having it tuned to have better shift times.


What's your all's experience?

 

What's your gear ratio, if 4.10, you'll probably be fine, if 3.73 or 3.55, it would explain it.33s are best with a 4.56 or 4.10 at the least

 

With 30s and 3.73s I got about 18 city, 22 hwy.

With 33s and 3.73s I got about 10 city, 20 hwy.

With 33s and 4.56s I got about 17 city, 19 why.

What I'm about to be getting? I have no freakin clue lol.

This drop is very possible, the added stress to take off + higher rolling resistance + more air drag + relatively high gear ratio + winter mix gas could very well give you a 4mpg drop

 

That's about the expected drop.

 

You'll definitely want a tuner if you want some MPG back.

 

You also need to factor in that your odometer is no longer accurate............

For example, if you had 27" tires and put on 31" when speedometer is showing 60MPH you are really going 70MPH
In an hour you would travel 70 miles but odometer only would record 60 miles.

Yes larger tires have more weight and often larger footprint so more friction, and of course higher stance so slightly more wind resistance but a truck is a rolling brick anyway so.....lol.

I think the biggest drop is the change in odometer

if I went to 4.56 gears and a tune, what would be the negatives? aside from my bank account.

I may just leave the 4.10's and have it tuned. There is a top of the line performance shop just down the road from me, that I have heard nothing but perfect things about, so I may see what they can do.


I just contacted the performance shop. It is $500 for the tune, and $380 for the SCT tuner. Is this pretty normal?

 

If you went with 4.56's you might lose a little on your highway MPG's because you'll be cruising at slightly higher RPMs. Getting a tuner should help, as well as calibrate your speedometer. There is a chart that shows your RPM's to gear ratio I think on The Ranger Station? That can give you an idea.

That $500 must be for dyno tuning. There's no need for that if all you're doing is getting bigger tires. Get a SCT from More Power Tuning and it comes with 3 free custom tunes.

IMO, there aren't really any negatives to running 4.56s and 33s, especially with a tune. You should lose any sluggishness you have with the 33s and 4.10s. See my other post for my fuel mileage experiences. You have a 4.0 and I had a 3.0, but the fuel mileage difference will most likely be negligible.

 

These. I did the same when I went from 30's to 31.5's. I run an Eco tune, have 31's and 3.73's I was getting 17 city and over 20 on the highway. Now I'm getting 15mpg. I need to do a tune up, my plugs are on the bench and I need to buy a fuel filter.

Get ahold of rogue for some tunes, they'll help.

 

More Power Tuning or Rogue? What do you all prefer?

Lasota or rogue are the way to go

 

MPT is where I just bought my tuner. It came highly recommended by a few guys I know down here. I haven't got to use my tuner yet for obvious reasons, but they shipped my stuff out quickly, they price match tuners, you get 3 free custom tunes when you buy a tuner from them in addition to the standard SCT tunes, and if you look at their custom tune form, there are a ton of different tuning parameters they can accommodate.

Hopefully I can report some more personal experience soon, but that's all I have now. Like I said, I know a couple of guys down here that have used them for various vehicles and they've all been pleased.

 

Look for someone who has done work with the 3.0 or 4.0. The latter is a little easier since it came in the mustang from what 05-09?
