Probably a stupid question...

When I am driving in the dunes (sand) I don't like the way my truck shifts. Many times I want to keep the RPMs up but the truck will upshift. I know this is just an automatic being an automatic.

My question, is there anything dangerous about just shifting between first and second manually? Is this ok to do this under power?

Shifting an automatic between first and second should not do any harm to your transmission. You do need to make sure you do not over-rev the engine when shifting down. I think automatic transmissions today are controlled so as not to let the engine over-rev in a down shift. Just be on the safe side and watch your rpm and speed.

You should be fine manually shifting it. We slap shift my friends Mark 8 when ripping burnouts and it has no change in shift pressures a stated above, don't down shift it at high rpm though. At some point you'll probably learn what rpm is safe to downshift at though

Thanks guys. Thought I'd ask before I go do it just in case. I drive manuals too so I am aware not to downshift when at high rpm. Automatic shifting in sand just sucks. I rather keep it in a lower gear and just drive it by the rpms.

yep im sure you already know the shift points from having your truck for a while. I knew where all of mine were so if i ever floored it messing around, I'd let off and reapply the throttle when I knew it was going to shift lol.

hopefully you don't shift as you hit a bump and end up in reverse or park haha. at least it'll be in sand with less friction if it happens

It would have to be a big bump to go pass Drive too. But I do always get nervous about that when I put it in neutral when coming home from the mountains.
